Saint-Véran in de Hautes-Alpes is volgende de Fransen het hoogste dorp in Europa dat het hele jaar door bewoond wordt. Maar er zijn meer dorpen in de Alpen die dit claimen. Met ruim 2000 meter hoogte ligt het in ieder geval hoger dan de top van de Mont Ventoux en is het daarmee het dorp in de Queras het hoogste van Frankrijk. En dat vinden wij voldoende.

Saint-Véran is niet alleen het hoogste dorp van de Frankrijk, het is ook één van de oudste wintersport plaatsen. Al in de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw werd er hier al geskied, gelanglauft en allerlei ander wintervertier georganiseerd. De opkomst van het toerisme heeft het dorp voorgoed veranderd maar in Saint-Véran kan je nog wel een beetje van het oude bergdorp zien.

De huizen zijn zo gebouwd dat ze bestand zijn tegen lawines. In deze huizen wordt al eeuwen hout bewerkt en dat doen ze nog steeds in dit dorp in de Alpen. Het houtsnijwerk uit Saint-Véran is hier dan ook tot kunst verheven en altijd leuk om te bekijken. Daarnaast kan je in de directe omgeving van het dorp natuurlijk prachtig wandelen.
