Sainte-Suzanne ligt in Normandië ten westen van Le Mans op een rots zeventig meter boven de vallei van de rivier de Erve. Het dorp heeft prachtige versterkte muren met een opmerkelijke geschiedenis. Dit is namelijk de enige vesting in Normandië waar Willem de Veroveraar nooit in handen heeft gekregen. Toen was Sainte-Suzanne een stad in Normandië, nu is het een mooi dorp in de Pays de Loire met een prachtig centrum en een mooi uitzicht op de omgeving dat vraagt om verkend te worden, het liefst te voet of op de fiets.

De naam dankt het dorp aan een plaatselijke martelares die in de derde eeuw na Christus om het leven kwam. Hoe precies kon ik niet zo snel niet achterhalen maar een plaatselijke heer heeft haar relieken naar het dorp gebracht en zo kreeg de nederzetting haar naam en een beschermheilige. Naast de stad behoedt deze heilige ook de verloofden en dat is natuurlijke een mooie taak.

In de middeleeuwen groeide Sainte-Suzanne uit tot een stadje dat dankzij zijn ligging strategische waarde had. In de elfde eeuw vochten de lokale heren in Frankrijk elkaar de tent uit waarbij de Hertog van Normandië één van de machtigste was. Deze Willem, die net Engeland had veroverd en zich tot Engels koning had laten kronen en zo zijn bijnaam ‘De Veroveraar’ verdiende, had ook een oogje laten vallen op Sainte-Suzanne. Maar wat hem in Engeland wel was gelukt, lukte hier niet. Hij belegerde de stad maar liefst drie jaar maar moest het toch opgeven.
Hoewel het dorp een middeleeuws karakter heeft en het daarom ook de moeite waard is om te bezoeken wordt deze plek al veel langer bewoond. Recent archeologisch onderzoek van de dolmens in de buurt van het dorp bewijst dat hier in het zesde eeuw voor Christus al mensen woonden.
Dat zijn indrukwekkende cijfers maar als je er loopt heb je er helemaal geen last van. Een wandeling in het dorp leidt al snel naar de dubbele Middeleeuwse stadsmuren. Maar een wandeltocht langs de oever van de Erve is zeker de moeite waard. Naast het natuurschoon zie je een ander verhaal uit het verleden in vorm van maar liefst zeventien molens waaruit blijkt dat deze plaats ook een rijke economische geschiedenis heeft. De route kan worden opgehaald in de plaatselijke Office du Tourisme.
