Zoals veel dorpjes is Locronan ontstaan rondom een klooster. Het klooster werd in de zesde eeuw gesticht door de heilige Ronan. We weten niet zo veel over deze goede man maar hij was waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Ierland en naar Bretagne afgereisd om het christendom te promoten. Een soort Bonifatius van Bretagne zou je kunnen zeggen. Zijn relieken liggen nog altijd in het kerkje dat hier in de vijftiende eeuw is gebouwd.

Dankzij deze relieken werd het dorp een pelgrimsoord en mede hierdoor kende Locronan aan het einde van de middeleeuwen een bloeitijd. Op de tweede zondag van juli staat hier in het teken van de Troménie, een processie waar pelgrims meelopen. Deze traditie is al ouder dan het christendom want de Kelten bouwden hier in de vijfde eeuw een Nemeton.

Dat is een vierhoek met een omtrek van twaalf kilometer die het aantal maanden van de Keltisch jaar symboliseert. ‘If you can beat them, join them’ moet Ronan gedacht hebben en dus kerstendehij  de Nameton. Dat had Bonifatius misschien ook moeten doen met die eik bij Dokkum. Elk jaar wordt er nog trouw een processie georganiseerd om Ronan te eren. Deze leidt langs de twaalf kilometer die volgens de legende elke dag wordt afgelegd door de heilige.

Naast Pelgrimsoord bracht ook de hennepteelt welvaart. Nu was het niet zo dat ze daar in de zeventiende eeuw massaal in de coffeeshop zaten. Hoewel het niet duidelijk is of het veel werd genuttigd, is het wel zeker dat het gewas werd gebruikt voor het maken van touwen, een product waar in de vele havens in Bretagne veel vraag naar was. Het dorp heeft naast prachtige huizen en een kerk tevens twee kleine kapellen en een museum.
