Er moet heel wat gebeuren in de boze buitenwereld wil de impact ervan doordringen in het lieflijke dorpje Axat, aan de voet van de Pyreneeën. De ongeveer 900 inwoners bewegen zich bij voorkeur slenterend door de paar smalle straatjes, goedmoedig ‘bonjour’ zeggend tegen de toeristen, die hier doorgaans van het prettige slag zijn. Dus geen lawaaimakende zonzoekers maar natuurliefhebbers die komen wandelen, kanoën of klimmen.
Mijn dochter en ik waren er in de zomer van 2014 twee van.

Omdat ik de conditie van mijn stokoude Mazda en – vooral – het humeur van mijn 6-jarige spruit niet vertrouwde, pakte ik het vliegtuig naar Zuid-Frankrijk. Nou ja, naar Girona, in Noord-Spanje. Vervolgens boemelden we per bus in tweeënhalf uur naar Axat. Daar stond, op camping Le Moulin Pont Du d’Alies, een tent met koelkast, gasfornuis en echte bedden op ons te wachten.

Axat ligt 65 kilometer (vijf kwartier met de auto) ten zuiden van de prachtige middeleeuwse stad Carcassonne in het Katharenland. Overal om je heen zie je grotendeels groene bergen. Behalve als de Tour-karavaan langskomt gebeurt er eigenlijk nooit iets, vertelde een inwoner me op de eerste dag trots. ‘Muy bien,’ zei ik opgelucht – zij het helaas dus in de verkeerde taal. Ik wilde mijn vermoeide brein even stilzetten, schone lucht inademen en zo weinig mogelijk meemaken. Axat is dan the place to be.

Ontspanning door inspanning?

Ook hiervoor geldt: welkom in Axat! Je kunt er prachtige wandelingen maken. Bovendien hebben ze er zoveel mogelijk manieren bedacht om blauwe plekken op te lopen. Je kunt er rotsklimmen, abseilen, canyoningen, hydrospeeden, raften en mountainbiken. De rivier de Aude is medium-spannend – en voor de doorsnee Hollander dus precies goed.

Qua voorzieningen: er is een kruidenierswinkeltje dat in staat is je geruime tijd in leven te houden. Maar na dag twee had ik echt méér nodig.

‘Waar is de dichtstbijzijnde supermarkt?’ vroeg ik een Nederlandse reisleidster op de camping.
‘Na de uitgang rechtsaf,’ zei ze behulpzaam. ‘Na twaalf minuten zie je hem aan je linkerhand. Kan niet missen.’
Dus toog ik, op teenslippers, rechtsaf. Na twintig minuten begon ik me enige zorgen te maken. Rechts de rivier, links een rotswand en verderop zo te zien méér rivier en rotswand. Na drie kwartier maakte ik moedeloos rechtsomkeert. Dat betekende: ook drie kwartier terug. Op slippers. Waar mijn tenen nog niet aan gewend waren.
Terug op de camping strompelde ik naar de reisleidster, die geschrokken naar mijn voeten keek. ‘Wat is er met jóu gebeurd?’
Ik keek haar strak aan. ‘Twaalf minuten verderop, zei je…’
Ontzet sloeg ze haar hand voor haar mond. ‘Met de áuto ja!’
