De Mont Aigoual is met 1567 meter niet de hoogste top van de Cevennen maar heeft zonder twijfel wel het mooiste uitzicht. Vanaf de top heb je niet alleen zicht op de Cevennen maar kun je bij helder weer de toppen van de Pyreneeën, die van de Alpen en de Cantal zien. Kijk je naar het zuiden dan zie je het prachtige blauw van de Middellandse zee en de vlakte van de Languedoc. Er wordt dan ook wel gezegd dat je vanaf Mont Aigoual een kwart van Frankrijk kan overzien. Een klassiek Frans dorp heeft een grote kerk, een rivier en als het even kan een mooi kasteel. Bonneval sur Arc lijkt op niets van dit alles. Het dorp in de Haut-Maurianne in de Franse Alpen en ligt in een diepe vallei dat wordt omgeven door bergen waarvan de meeste toppen hoger zijn dan drieduizend meter.

Op deze hoogte is geen boom te zien en is hout schaars waardoor de huizen bijna compleet gemaakt zijn van leisteen. Dat geeft Bonneval een heel eigen karakter en sfeer.  Lees verder Bonneval sur Arc: alpendorp met huizen van leisteen *** →

Chamonix wordt de hoofdstad van de bergsport genoemd. Aangezien wij geen klimmers zijn, drie van de vier gezinsleden hebben hoogtevrees, dachten wij niet zo veel te zoeken te hebben in dit stadje aan de voet van de Mont Blanc. Maar dat bleek helemaal verkeerd gedacht want Chamonix is helemaal leuk en wij hebben er ons twee dagen uitstekend vermaakt zonder dat we een klimbijl hebben aangeraakt. Hoogtepunten waren het bezoek aan de Mer du Glace en de Aiguille du Midi.

Er moet heel wat gebeuren in de boze buitenwereld wil de impact ervan doordringen in het lieflijke dorpje Axat, aan de voet van de Pyreneeën. De ongeveer 900 inwoners bewegen zich bij voorkeur slenterend door de paar smalle straatjes, goedmoedig ‘bonjour’ zeggend tegen de toeristen, die hier doorgaans van het prettige slag zijn. Dus geen lawaaimakende zonzoekers maar natuurliefhebbers die komen wandelen, kanoën of klimmen.
Mijn dochter en ik waren er in de zomer van 2014 twee van.

Frankrijk staat op je shortlist van de vakantiebestemming en de bergen lijken je wel leuk. Kijkend naar de atlas van Europa zie je dat Frankrijk best een groot land is. Op een dik uur rijden van Tarbes ligt de Pic du Midi du Bigorre. Met een hoogte van 2.877 meter is het niet de hoogste berg van de Pyreneeën, maar zeker één van de interessantste om te bezoeken. Op de top hebben de Fransen namelijk een enorme sterrenwacht gebouwd die nog altijd een belangrijke rol speelt bij het onderzoek van het heelal. De trotse Fransen hebben het zelfs voor elkaar gekregen dat het uitzicht op de sterren vanaf de Pic du Midi op de werelderfgoedlijst staat.
