Gargilesse-Dampierre ligt op dik twee uur rijden ten zuiden van Parijs vlak naast de snelweg A20. Het dorp ligt prachtig op de oever van de rivier Gargilesse en trekt door haar schoonheid nog altijd kunstenaars aan. Het heeft een eigen museum en een kerk met verrassend gave fresco’s uit de dertiende eeuw.

Tijdens een wandeling door Gargilesse-Dampierre kan je niet om de kerk en het kasteel heen. Het kasteel is voor een groot deel verwoest maar er staat nog een poort met twee indrukwekkende ronde torens. De kerk behoorde oorspronkelijk ook bij het kasteel en het is niet moeilijk te zien aangezien hij nog binnen de verdedigingsmuren staat.

Wij bezochten het dorp op doortocht naar huis vanaf een camping in het zuiden van de Limousin. Een perfecte stopplaats dacht ik maar dat viel eigenlijk wel tegen. Niet dat het dorp niet mooi is, in tegendeel, maar het ligt niet echt handig langs de snelweg. Je bent vanaf de snelweg toch een kleine twintig minuten aan het rijden.

Deze tocht is best aardig overigens want het landschap is hier licht glooiend en heerlijk om in te rijden. Ons gezin vond het ook wel prima en is ook wel gewend aan het bezoeken van een dorpje.

Omdat het een zaterdag was, was het best druk in het dorp. We hadden dan ook moeite om een parkeerplek te vinden. Die vonden we aan de andere kant van Gargilesse-Dampierre en reden dus al eerst door het dorp en dat is altijd wel een beetje jammer. Ik zie een dorp de eerste keer liever te voet.

Kasteel

Ons doel was het kasteel en daarvoor moesten we eerst door het dorp met zijn gezellige en vriendelijke straatjes. Het kasteel ligt een beetje boven het dorp en heeft een heerlijke poort, precies zoals je van een kasteel verwacht. De twee kloeke torens die de toegang begeleiden lijken gebouwd voor de eeuwigheid en ook de gevel met zijn schietgaten zijn helemaal goed. Maar het juweel van het dorp ligt daarachter, onder de kerk die oorspronkelijk bij het kasteel hoorde.

De romaanse kerk heeft een aantal vreemde kenmerken. Zo is heeft het naar verhouding een kort schip en is het koor zevenhoekig en dat zie je bijna niet in Frankrijk. Binnen vind je meer dan honderd verschillende kapitelen die Bijbelse voorstelling laten zien. Nu is mijn bijbelkennis niet heel goed maar het is altijd leuk om het een beetje te testen. Ik kwam niet zo heel ver dit keer.

Onder het altaar bevindt zich de crypte en daar kan je mooiste schat uit dit dorp vinden. Bijna alle wanden zijn namelijk versiert met fresco’s uit de dertiende eeuw die er nog uitstekend uitzien. Dit gebeurde al wel vaker in die tijd maar in de loop der eeuwen zijn bijna allemaal vernietigd, uit elkaar gevallen of verbleekt. Een Fresco, een schildering waarbij de verf op natte kalk wordt aangebracht, is nu eenmaal heel kwetsbaar.

Hier zijn ze dus nog erg gaaf, tot op een zekere hoogte tenminste. Hier kan je uitstekende de figuren zien en niet half, maar helemaal. Hoewel we niet heel veel tijd hadden heb ik hier toch een tijdje gestaan om de tekeningen op mij in te laten werken. Zo vaak heb je niet de mogelijkheid om het werk van dertiende-eeuwers zo direct te bekijken. Hier kan het en je hoeft alleen maar naar binnen te lopen. Zeker even naar de kerk als je er bent!

Hoewel de schilders rond 1250 zich waarschijnlijk geen kunstenaars hebben gevoeld, schilderen werd gezien als een ambacht, waren zij wel de eersten die in het dorp kunst maakten en daarmee begonnen ze, onbewust waarschijnlijk, een lange traditie die nu altijd nog voortduurt.

Al was er een lange pauze in deze traditie. Pas aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw trokken de kunstenaars massaal uit de grote steden als Parijs om zich te laten inspireren door de natuur en de eenvoudige leven op het platteland. Deze beweging, die is ingezet door de impressionisten zoals Monet, Renoir, Degas en Cézanne, zou nooit meer ophouden en tot vandaag zoeken kunstenaars inspiratie op het Franse platteland.

Ook in Gargilesse-Dampierre streken er verschillende kunstenaars neer. De bekendste daarvan is ongetwijfeld Serge Delaveau die hier woonde en werkte. In het plaatselijk museum hangt een flink aantal werken van hem en het is een aanrader om daar even naar binnen te lopen, de toegang is gratis.

Bloedbad

In de Tweede Wereldoorlog is het dorp het decor van een dramatisch verhaal. In de Limousin was het Franse verzet behoorlijk goed georganiseerd. Bij het Franse verzet moet ik altijd direct denken aan ‘Allo, Allo’ maar hier ging het toch wel wat serieuzer aan toe.

Deze Maquis maakte het de Duitsers behoorlijk lastig met guerrillatactieken en dat was de bezetter een doorn in het oog. In juli 1944 weet het Duitse leger een groepje in te sluiten in dit dorp en maakt korte metten met ze. Dit gebeuren gaat de geschiedenisboeken in als de Slachting van Gargilesse-Dampierre.
