Langs de rivieren de Dordogne en de Lot zijn behoorlijk wat grotten te bezoeken. Gouffre de Padirac is één van de bekendste en spectaculairste. Dit komt omdat er twee zaken van deze grot zeer tot de verbeelding spreken. Ten eerste bestaat de ingang uit een enorm gat in de grond met een doorsnede van meer dan veertig meter en ten tweede stroomt in de grot een rivier, waar je met gondels overheen vaart. Naast de prachtige zalen zijn het deze twee eigenschappen die deze grot zo geliefd maken bij toeristen.

Wij bezochten de grot twee keer, beide keren in de meivakantie. De eerste keer lag er sneeuw en was de temperatuur buiten net boven het vriespunt, waardoor het in de grot zelf heerlijk warm was. Daar is het namelijk altijd 13 graden en het is in de zomer dan ook aan te raden een trui mee te nemen.

Het toeristenseizoen was duidelijk nog niet begonnen en daarom konden wij de auto voor de deur parkeren. De grote parkeerplaatsen en het plein voor het entreegebouw verraadden dat dit uitzonderlijk was, hier kan het in het hoogseizoen behoorlijk druk zijn. Het entreegebouw is trouwens wel even de aandacht waard, want dat is bijzonder fraai ontworpen. Er is aan het begin van het terrein een speciale plek voor campers, maar volgens mij mag je daar niet overnachten.

Lift of trappen

Wij wandelden zonder problemen langs de rijen hekjes naar het entreegebouw. Dit is best een aardig gebouwtje, waarin je naast de kassa de onvermijdelijke souvenirwinkel vindt. Nadat de kaartjes waren gekocht, daalden we af naar de grot. Hiervoor is een grote stalen constructie met een lift en trappen, in het gat in de grond geplaatst. De lift is natuurlijk het meest comfortabel, maar de diepte afzakken met de open trap is veel leuker.

Het gat is rond de 75 meter diep en is aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw door Alfred Martel ontdekt, een bekende naam in de speleologie, want deze beste man heeft zo’n beetje de helft van de Franse grotten ontdekt. Dat was niet echt moeilijk omdat het plafond van het enorme gat in de grond, een gouffre genaamd, was ingestort. Het gat is ontstaan door water dat miljoenen jaren de grond heeft weggespoeld. Toch verdient de man respect want hij was de eerste die via een touwladder in het gat afdaalde.

Eenmaal beneden blijkt het gat in de grond nog groter dan vanaf boven. Het water dat de gouffre heeft uitgesleten valt nog steeds, waardoor je op de bodem in een ondergrondse regenbui staat. Hierna leidt de route je via wat trappen naar een brede gang onder de grond, die je naar de bootjes brengt. Naast het pad,dat tevens dienst doet als wachtrij, zoekt flink wat water zijn weg naar de ondergrondse rivier verderop. De gang was begin mei niet in gebruik als wachtrij want er was praktisch niemand en dus liepen wij direct door naar het haventje.

Varen in een grot

De bootjes worden door gondeliers door middel van een flinke boom verplaatst. De bootjes zijn vrij nat omdat het water op allerlei plekken door het plafond druppelt, trek dus niet je driedelig of mantelpakje aan, want die hou je niet droog. Daarbij schommelen de bootjes behoorlijk. Dit wordt tijdens de tocht nog geaccentueerd door de gondelier die nog wel eens grappig wil doen. Dat is natuurlijk leuk en goed voor de sfeer. Het water is ongelooflijk helder en de grot is sfeervol aangelicht en dat maakt het boottochtje een erg leuke ervaring.

Bij aankomst wacht een gids die je meeneemt naar erg mooie en vooral grote zalen. Het hoogtepunt van de excursie is een hoge zaal met een bassin met helder water dat als een spiegel oogt en de Grande Pendeloque: een zeer grote steen van maar liefst 60 meter hoog. Na een klein half uurtje ben je weer terug bij de gondels en begint de terugtocht.

Als je in de buurt bent, dan is de Gouffre de Padirac een echte aanrader. Zeker met kinderen is een bezoek zeker de moeite waard. De grot is erg mooi, maar de afdaling en het tochtje over de rivier zorgen ervoor dat een bezoek je lang zal bijblijven. Het kan er wel druk zijn en het is wellicht een idee om je kaarten alvast online te kopen, want dan hoef je niet in de rij voor de kassa te staan.
