Auvillar ligt tussen Montauban en Agen op de oude pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de  Compostela niet ver van de rivier de Garonne. Het dorp heeft een interessant plein met een prachtig ronde markthal en een kerk waarvan de toren niet helemaal meer rechtop staan. Het dorp is bekend om zijn faïence, fijn aardewerk.

In Auvillar spraken we met vrienden af, om vervolgens naar een huis te rijden voor een gezamenlijke week vakantie. De weg naar dit dorp is niet echt heel bijzonder, al zou je de enorme kerncentrale bij de afslag van de autoroute toch ook niet alledaags kunnen noemen.

Toch ligt het dorp mooi en zijn de laatste kilometers naar Auvillar de moeite waard. Na een korte klim kom je in het dorp aan. Een goede plek om de auto te parkeren is bij de kerk. Dan kan je die direct bekijken en je loopt zo naar het centrale plein.

Het is aan te raden om even de kerk in te lopen. Het gebouw is afgelopen eeuwen niet helemaal ongeschonden doorgekomen. De halve ruïne is daarom juist interessant om te bekijken

Maar het centrale plein is echt de juweel van dit mooie dorpje. Hier staat een fraaie ronde markthal. Hij is niet groot maar de vorm maakt hem uniek en de verhoudingen zijn zeer fraai.

Het plein is een beetje langwerpig compleet met een arcaden en een mooie boom in het midden. Bij ons bezoek was daar een mevrouw druk bezig een schilderij te produceren want zoals zo veel dorpen in Frankrijk zijn ook hier kunstenaars actief. En deze schilder was niet slecht.

Omdat het warm was besloten wij de schaduw van de parasol van het terras op te zoeken en onder genot van een ijsje onze vakantie-ervaringen uit te wissen met onze vrienden. Daarna vertrokken we naar onze gîte in Les Landes. Die bleek wel mooi en luxe was maar in een enorm saaie omgeving stond en ook dat is best uniek in Frankrijk.
