Het kleine dorpje Loubressac ligt op een rots boven de vallei van de Dordogne in de regio Midi-Pyrénées. Het dorpje heeft een kasteel, een mooie kerk en is nog niet zo druk met toeristen zodat je hier nog de rustige sfeer van de Quercy kan beleven met een adembenemend uitzicht op het dal van de Dordogne.

Loubressac heeft een zeer lange geschiedenis, het is zelfs niet helemaal duidelijk hoe lang. Wel is het duidelijk dat voor de Romeinen het gebied al werd bewoond. Na de komst van de mannen uit Rome werd de nederzetting Luperciacum gedoopt. Duidelijk is wel dat het dorp zich toen op een andere plek bevond dan nu, namelijk onderaan de rots waarop het zich nu bevindt.

De verhuizing naar boven vond plaats in de veertiende eeuw. Frankrijk werd toen geteisterd door de Honderdjarige oorlog met Engeland en de streek rond Loubressac ligt lag midden in de frontlijn. Om zich te beschermen tegen de plunderende soldaten werd er op de rots boven het dorp een vesting gebouwd waar als snel de hele bevolking een veilig heenkomen zocht.

Dal van de Dordogne en Bave

Een triest verhaal natuurlijk maar Loubressac ligt nu wel erg mooi en heb je vanuit het dorp een prachtig uitzicht op het dal van de Dordogne vlakbij de plek waar de Bave uitmondt. Het landschap rondom de rivier is niet zo ruw als verder stroomafwaarts, het is veel evenwichtiger en rustiger. Saai is het allerminst want bij mooi weer zie je aan de ene kant de torens de kastelen van Castelnau en Montal liggen en aan de andere kant die van het stadje Saint-Céré met daarachter de uitlopers van het Central Massif.

De vesting in Loubressac zelf is nog altijd te herkennen en staat fier op de punt van een rots dat over het dal uitkijkt. Niet meer als militair bolwerk want, het kreeg in de zeventiende eeuw een flinke opknapbeurt, maar als prachtig landhuis dat helaas niet voor het publiek toegankelijk is. Dat mag de pret natuurlijk niet drukken want het dorp barst van de mooie huizen en straatjes. Deze zijn toegankelijk via een grote poort waarachter de intimiteit van een vestingstadje voelbaar is.

Natuursteen

De huizen en gebouwen van Loubressac zijn gebouwd van licht natuursteen waardoor het karakter van het dorp licht en open is. Wij bezochten Loubressac eind april en dan is het dorp nog niet helemaal wakker uit zijn winterslaap. De straatjes waren uitgestorven, lang niet alle winkels waren open en de bewoners keken ons met een verbaasde blik aan. Op een pleintje kwamen we een groepje Amerikanen tegen die ons voor Fransen hielden en bovendien verantwoordelijk voor het feit dat ze geen restaurant konden vinden om hun honger te stillen. Ze bleken die nacht in Frankrijk te zijn aangekomen en voor het laatst in het vliegtuig te hebben gegeten. Gelukkig bleek op het pleintje een klein café net open te gaan waarna de Amerikanen met zich op de lunchkaart stortten.

Het kerkje van Loubressac in de moeite waard om te bekijken. Het is gebouwd in de veertiende eeuw en twee eeuwen later nog eens vergroot. Het is opgetrokken in de Romaanse stijl zoals zoveel kerken in de Quercy. Binnen is met name het koor indrukwekkend met zijn blauwe plafond.

Eten en drinken

De streek rond de Dordogne is bekend om zijn fijne keuken en hoewel wij in Loubressac niet hebben gegeten, denk ik dat je hier heerlijk kan eten. Saffraan en truffels zijn hier de plaatselijke delicatesse, en dat is natuurlijk geen straf.

Het dorp ligt perfect als uitvalsbasis om de interessante omgeving te verkennen. Bij de VVV (alleen open in de zomer) zijn meerdere wandeltochten te krijgen, onder andere naar het mooie rustige Autoire, dat hier om de hoek ligt. Maar ook Carrenac en Curemonte liggen niet ver en kunnen met de auto makkelijk worden bezocht. Naast deze ‘Plus beaux villages’ ligt in het zuiden het mooie en interessante Rocamadour en in het westen de prachtige grotten van Padirac. Genoeg te doen dus en het dorp heeft meerdere hotels, verschillende gîtes en twee campings. Omdat het dorp maar een tiental kilometer van de snelweg A20 ligt, is het ook ideaal als overnachting als je op doorreis bent.
