Het woord pittoresk lijkt voor Castelnau-de-Montmiral te zijn bedacht. Centraal in dorp in de Tarn ligt een heerlijk plein met vakwerkhuizen met arcaden en in het midden een mooie oude put. Dit soort pleinen zie je wel meer in zuidwest Frankrijk maar dit plein is net iets kleiner waardoor het intiemer aanvoelt.

Castelnau-de-Montmiral ligt op een rots dat zich boven de vallei van de Vère uitsteekt. Het dorp werd in de dertiende eeuw gesticht als vestingstad als vervanging voor een andere burcht die is verwoest tijdens de kruistocht tegen de Albigenzen. De kerk komt uit de vijftiende eeuw en heeft een kleurrijk interieur. Hier is een bijzonder reliekkruis te zien uit de dertiende eeuw. Het Croix de Montmiral geldt als een uitzonderlijk goed voorbeeld van religieuze edelsmeedkunst.

Castelnau-de-Montmiral ligt midden in het wijngebied Gaillac. Dit is één van de oudste wijngebieden van Frankrijk want hier werden in de zesde eeuw voor Christus al druiven verbouwd. De ruime ervaring betaalt zich uit want deze wijnen behoren tot de beste van Frankrijk, vooral de rode wijn is erg goed. Castelnau-de-Montmiral is een uitstekende plek om deze wijn te proeven.
