Monestiés is een klein vestingstadje in de Tarn. Het dorp is compact gebouwd binnen de muren die er niet meer staan, maar het is nog goed te zien waar ze ooit hebben gestaan. Hier en daar staat nog een poort. De huizen zijn dicht op elkaar gebouwd en de straatjes en steegjes vormen een doolhof rondom de kerk die in het midden van Monestiés staat.

De kerk is gewijd aan Petrus maar interessanter is de kleine kapel die voor de heilige Jacobus is opgericht. Hier vind je de aantal groepen beelden uit de middeleeuwen en die zijn best uniek.

Vooral de groep die de graflegging van Jezus trekt de aandacht. De beelden zijn uitgehouwen uit kalksteen uit de omgeving en hebben opvallende sierlijke figuren met sprekende gezichten.

Het is rond 1500 gemaakt door een onbekende beeldhouwer maar hij kon er echt wel wat van.

Tot slot herbergt het dorp nog een museum met werken van Bajén en Vega. Deze Spaanse kunstenaars vluchtten tijdense de burgeroorlog in het begin van de twintigste eeuw naar Monestiés. Dat deden wel meer Spanjaarden in die tijd want na de Burgeroorlog kwam er een redelijk onguur regime aan de macht.

Het paar woonde werkte en woonde lang in het dorp en een deel van hun werk is nu te zien in het museum.
