Lavarin ligt ten noorden van Blois en vlakbij de kleine stad Vendôme. Het aanzien van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de ruïne van  wat ooit een machtig kasteel was. In de kronkelige straatjes en steegjes staan tal van prachtige huizen.

In het centrum van het dorp vind je een kerkje uit de dertiende eeuw met daarin zeer interessante fresco’s uit de dertiende en zestiende eeuw. Dat is de tijd de tijd dat Lavardin zijn bloeiperiode kende en dat was tevens de tijd dat de Gotische stijl de Romaanse stijl verving. Die verandering in de kunst en architectuur is goed te zien aan de gebouwen in dit Franse dorp want die zijn meestal in deze twee stijlen opgetrokken. In de zestiende eeuw beleefde Lavarin opnieuw een bloei waardoor een flink aantal huizen ook nog eens Renaissance kenmerken hebben.

Het stadhuis is een typisch voorbeeld van een combinatie van de Romaanse en Gotische stijl. Als de mogelijkheid bestaat loop dan even binnen want de zalen zijn bijzonder fraai.

De kerk van het dorp is niet heel groot en ziet er van buiten ook niet indrukwekkend uit. Loop even naar binnen en ontdek de prachtige middeleeuwse fresco’s die heel goed bewaard zijn gebleven. Dat is best bijzonder.

Maar bovenal ligt het dorp er gewoon heel erg mooi bij langs de rivier. Lavardin is om zijn mooist vanaf de andere oever waar je een prachtig plaatje hebt van het water, de oude brug, het dorp en het kasteel.
