De streek bij de grens tussen Frankrijk en Italië bij Menton heeft één van de meest dramatische landschappen die ik ken. Hier duiken vanaf het noorden de Alpen de Middellandse Zee in en dat zorgt voor een prachtig samenspel tussen de ruige bergen en het blauwe water van de zee. Hoog in dit landschap ligt Sainte-Agnès, een dorp met een uniek uitzicht over de zee en de bergen.

Sainte-Agnès is gebouwd op de steile kalkrots op 666 meter hoog en daarmee is het hoogste dorp aan de kust. De weg vanuit Menton slingert via verschillende haarspelbochten en een col omhoog naar het dorp en is een attractie op zich. Snel gaat het hier nooit en dat moet je ook niet willen. Het is niet leuk voor de passagiers en bovendien zie je helemaal niets als je hier te snel rijdt.

De echte route begint op een enigszins vreemde plek onder het viaduct van de snelweg tussen Nice en Italië. Wij hadden vroegen ons even af of dit wel goed ging maar door braaf de routeplanner te volgen kwam het goed. De weg begint gelijk te klimmen. Eerst langs prachtige huizen maar naar mate je hoger neemt de natuur het over. Terwijl je naar boven slingert wordt je zo nu en dan getrakteerd op het prachtige uitzicht op de Middellandse Zee.
Vanuit het dorp heb je dan ook een uitzonderlijk mooi panorama over Menton en de Cap Martin. Het mooie uitzicht en de grens met Italië wijzen op een strategische ligging en dat is militairen niet ontgaan. Vanzelfsprekend heeft Sainte-Agnès een oud kasteel, je bent in een Frans dorp of niet. Deze is alleen te voet te bereiken via een half verharde weg die bij het kerkhof begint. Het is niet echt een lange tocht door de stijging en de staat van het pad is het niet aan te raden voor mensen die slecht ter been zijn.
De tocht is de moeite waard want naast een prachtig uitzicht met oriëntatietafel voert dit pad ook langs een mooie middeleeuwse tuin. Vlak voor het kasteel zit iemand in een klein hokje maar we hoefde niets te betalen om naar binnen te mogen. Voor toeristen was het gratis werd ons gezegd waarna ik vroeg wie ze hier nog meer verwachtte. Daar moest ze hartelijk om lachen.
Het kasteel bleek een veel groter complex dan ik had gedacht. Het strekt zich uit over de gehele top van de berg met op het bovenste punt een dikke donjon. Naast de tuin is het kasteel een slechte staat, het is feitelijk een ruïne waar je half klauterend je weg naar het donjon vindt.
Het dorpje zelf heeft heerlijke steegjes en kleine straatjes waar je lekker kan verdwalen óf zoals in ons geval, genieten van de koele schaduw. Bezoek ook even de plaatselijke Office du Tourisme ze een klein museum hebben ingericht over de streek. Wij werden daar ontvangen door een Vlaamse mevrouw die zowaar deze site kende. Dat voelde als een hele eer waarna ik natuurlijk een praatje maakte die uiteindelijk werd onderbroken door mijn familieleden die buiten langer een half uur stonden te wachten. “Zo is wel genoeg pap!” en daar hadden ze ook wel een beetje gelijk in.
Fort Maginot de Sainte-Agnès
In de meeste dorpen in Frankrijk stopt de militaire geschiedenis in de middeleeuwen maar in Sainte Agnès is dat niet het geval. Het schilderachtige dorp kreeg namelijk tussen de twee wereldoorlogen in nog een belangrijke rol bij de Franse plannen voor het verdedigen van het land.
Wat was het geval? De Eerste Wereldoorlog was wel verloren door Duitsland maar het had zijn kracht niet verloren en dat was Frankrijk niet ontgaan. De vrede die werd opgelegd voelden voor de Duitsers hard en oneerlijk maar eigenlijk viel dat mee. Duitsland had nog steeds een snel groeiende bevolking en de Duitse industrie was na Amerika de sterkste van de wereld. Frankrijk zag dit met lede ogen aan en besefte zich heel goed dat het buurland een grote bedreiging vormde zeker op het moment dat de VS en Engeland zich terugtrokken van het Europese vaste land. Frankrijk werd aan alle kanten voorbij gelopen door Duitsland en daar moest een antwoord komen.
Om Duitsland het hoofd te kunnen bieden bouwde Frankrijk in de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw de grootste en duurste verdedigingslinie ooit. Net als een middeleeuwse stad zou Frankrijk door een muur moeten worden beschermd. Dit project staat bekend als de Maginotlinie waar de enorme bunkers in de Elzas en in Lotharingen beroemd om zijn. Fort Hackenberg nabij Luxemburg is het grootste en bekendste voorbeeld van de enorme forten die Frankrijk in die tijd bouwde.
Nooit gebruikt
Minder bekend is dat de Fransen ook hun zuidoost grens wilden beschermen. Italië was in de Eerste Wereldoorlog wel een bondgenoot maar Frankrijk was er niet zeker van of dit bij een nieuw conflict weer het geval zou zijn. Een juiste inschatting bleek later. Om de grens te beschermen werden er op tal van plaatsen in de Alpen grote bunkers gebouwd. Niet zo groot als in het noorden, maar even goed nog van een redelijk formaat.
Om de kustlijn en de grens bij Menton te verdedigen werd er in Sainte-Agnès een bunker gebouwd met groot geschut. En dit bouwsel staat er nog steeds want het is net als zowat de hele Maginotlinie nooit gebruikt. De Duitsers trokken namelijk met tanks in het noorden om de hele verdediging heen en de Italianen verklaarden Frankrijk pas de oorlog toen Duitsland de klus al bijna had geklaard. De bunker is te bezoeken en voor iedereen met interesse voor de geschiedenis van de twintigste eeuw is dat een must.
