Zoals de naam van het dorp al doet vermoeden is de geschiedenis van Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye nauw verbonden met het klooster. De abdij was de trotse bezitter van de relieken van de heilige Antonius en ligt op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. Het dorp in de Isère groeide rondom de religieuze gebouwen die nog altijd het aanzien van Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye domineren.

De geschiedenis van de Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye begint in de elfde eeuw toen de relieken van de Heilige Antonius vanuit Constantinopel naar het zuiden van Frankrijk werden gebracht. Deze heilige leefde in de vierde eeuw in Egypte als kluizenaar en die waren populair in Frankrijk op dat moment. Hoe was dat zo gekomen?

In de elfde eeuw ontstond onder de bevolking van West-Europa een enorme religieuze opleving waarbij kloosters een centrale rol speelden. Kluizenaars waren in deze stroming zeer populair omdat die een leven hadden geleid dat erg veel leek op dat van Jezus. Kluizenaars werden zo het voorbeeld van een vroom leven en een klooster werd gezien als een club van kluizenaars die het gezamenlijk het wat praktischer aanpakten.

De overblijfselen van zo’n heilige kluizenaar, de relieken, hadden dan ook veel aanzien en niet zelden gebeurden er allerlei wonderen. Voor de relieken van de heilige Antonius werd een klooster gebouwd door de monniken van Montmajour en waarna het uitgroeide tot een dorp en is dus nu een Plus Beaux Village de France.

De gebouwen van de abdij domineren nog altijd het dorp waarbij de abdijkerk de meest opvallende is. In twaalfde eeuw werd er begonnen met de bouw en die zou tot de vijftiende eeuw duren. Ook toen gebeurde het wel eens dat een publiekelijk bouwproject wat langer duurde.

Het resultaat mag er wezen. De flamboyante gotische stijl is nog altijd indrukwekkend en een bezoek aan het dorp is niet compleet zonder een kijkje in de kerk. Neem dan even tijd om het portaal van de kerk goed te bekijken. Het klooster omvat een museum met een prachtige middeleeuwse tuin.

Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye bevat nog een klein pretpark dat curieus genoeg piraten als thema heeft. Je zou toch monniken of bisschoppen verwachten maar zover reikt het historisch besef van de plaatselijke bevolking kennelijk niet. Niet dat dit heel erg is want piraten zijn ook mooi en de kinderen zal het een worst zijn. Verwacht hier trouwens geen achtbanen en reuzenraden maar gewoon een leuke grote speeltuin met hier en daar een piraat. De kleine kinderen vermaken zich hier prima, pubers vervelen zich waarschijnlijk snel.
