Het leuke van vakantie is dat je zo nu en dan je onverwacht op mooie dingen stuit. De Pont Canal de Briare was er zo één voor mij. Deze kanaalbrug over de Loire ligt even ten oosten van Gien en is een prachtig voorbeeld van negentiende eeuwse voortuigangsdenken; een probleem met techniek oplossen én het nog mooi maken ook.

Eén van de mooiste attracties in de Provence is de Pont du Gard. Het bouwwerk is bijna tweeduizend jaar oud en een prachtig voorbeeld van de Romeinse bouwkunst. Het is buitengewoon goed bewaard gebleven en staat op een mooie plek waardoor techniek en landschap op een wonderbaarlijke manier elkaar aanvullen. Een bezoek aan deze burg over de Gardon is een ‘must’ en om met het groene boekje te spreken: ‘De reis waard’. De Pont staat op de lijst van de UNESCO en is dus werelderfgoed, maar dat is wel meer in Frankrijk.
