Curemonte telt maar liefst twee kastelen, want ondanks dat het dorp in het westen van Frankrijk niet groot is, heeft het in het verleden in de regio een rol gespeeld. Het mooie dorpje ligt hoog in het landschap van de Corrèze, zodat je de contouren van de muren en de kastelen al van ver kan zien liggen.

De geschiedenis van Curemonte begint in de zevende eeuw toen het dorp werd gesticht door de Merovingers. Deze Franken veroverden bijna het gehele gebied dat wij nu kennen als Frankrijk en daarmee werd een basis gelegd voor het latere rijk van Karel de Grote. De Merovingers waren niet alleen goede militairen maar ook cultureel verantwoord. Hun machtigste koning, Clovis, liet zich in Reims dopen waarmee het eerste christelijke rijk in het westen ontstond. Clovis wordt nog altijd beschouwd als de eerste Koning van Frankrijk.

Graanbeurs

In Curemonte is echter weinig terug te vinden uit deze tijd. Gelukkig is er veel uit latere eeuwen wel blijven staan en hoewel wat jonger is het nog steeds redelijk oud. Zo is er een prachtige graanbeurs uit de zestiende eeuw te vinden. Hier werd eeuwenlang het graan uit de omgeving verhandeld. Deze graanhal is een duidelijke aanwijzing van de economische rol die Curemonte in de regio heeft gespeeld. Dat is natuurlijk leuk om te weten, maar de oude bas-reliefs die hier zijn te vinden, zijn leuker voor het oog. Het zijn er twaalf en stellen het leven van Jezus voor.

Oude huizen

Wij bezochten Curemonte op een mooie dag in mei. Het zonnetje scheen na dagen van regen en de natuur vierde die dag één groot feest. Het gras leek groener en de bomen bloeiden alsof hun leven er vanaf hing, wat natuurlijk ook zo was. Bovendien rook de hele streek heerlijk. Het rook naar het opdrogen van de regen in de warme voorjaarszon.

Met geopende ramen naderden we het mooie dorpje waar de twee kastelen bovenuit staken. Eenmaal in het dorp werden we aangenaam verrast door de prachtige straatjes met hun mooie historische huizen. De kerk heeft een toren waarin je de bellen ziet hangen, wat al heel zuidelijk aandoet. Binnen vind je drie bijzonder altaarstukken.

Kastelen

De twee kastelen lijken aan elkaar te zijn gesmolten. Toch is dat niet het geval. De oudste van de twee heeft vierkante torens en heet Chateau Saint Hilaire. Het is in de viertiende eeuw gebouwd. Chateau des Plas is twee eeuwen later gebouwd en heeft ronde torens. Je kan er fijn wandelen en als je iets uit het dorp loopt, tref je een oriëntatietafel, iets wat je wel meer ziet in Frankrijk. Een prima plek om de lunch te nuttigen en te genieten van het uitzicht.

Het dorp herbergt een aantal grote huizen die rijkelijk zijn voorzien van allerlei versieringen. Sommige zijn zo groot dat je beter kan spreken over kastelen dan van huizen.

De beroemdste inwoner van Curemonte is Colette. Een schrijfster/ journaliste die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog in het dorpje woonde en daar een aantal vrolijke romans schreef. Dat deed ze om de Fransen een beetje op te vrolijken tijdens deze donkere tijd in de twintigste eeuw.

Curemonte ligt dichtbij een aantal ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’; Collonges la Rouge, Autoire, Carennac en Turenne liggen allemaal om de hoek.
