Lourmarin ligt aan de zuidelijke voet van de Luberon. De sfeer in het dorp is vrolijk, gezellig en charmant. Je kan de levensvreugde in de café’s en op de pleintjes hier bijna aanraken. Het dorp zit ook vol met creatieve geesten waarvan je de producten kan bewonderen in de vele galeries en kunstnijverheidswinkeltjes.

Het aanzien van Lourmarin wordt gedomineerd door het plaatselijke kasteel. Volgens de inwoners is dit kasteel uniek in Frankrijk omdat het de oudste in de Renaissance stijl is. Ik heb niet kunnen achterhalen of dit waar is, maar mooi en interessant is het gebouw zeker.

Het kasteel staat op een plek waar eerder waarschijnlijk een burcht stond. Het is bekend dat in de twaalfde eeuw voor het eerst in Lourmarin een kasteel werd gebouwd. De geschiedenis van het dorpje gaat nog veel verder, want het is zeker dat de plek al werd bewoond in het neolithicum, de prehistorie dus.

Het kasteel van Lourmarin wordt nu gebruikt voor tal van culturele activiteiten, zoals concerten en lezingen. Tevens is er een academie gevestigd waar jongeren een spoedcursus in talen, cultuur en geschiedenis krijgen. Als ik tiener zou zijn, had ik mij daar een paar weken in de zomer uitermate goed vermaakt. Het slot is gewoon open voor publiek en er zijn ook leuke speurtochten voor kinderen.

In het verleden is het niet altijd pais en vree geweest in Lourmarin. Tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen in de zeventiende eeuw koos het dorp de kant van de hugenoten. Dat bleek in 1545 een vrij ongelukkige keuze te zijn, want toen werd het dorp platgebrand door de katholieken. Gelukkig is het vandaag weer allemaal netjes opgeruimd en weer opgebouwd.

Toch zijn er nog steeds brokstukken uit dit bewogen verleden te vinden in het mooie dorp in de Vaucluse. Zo staat er midden in het centrum een protestantse kerk. En hoewel je weet dat Frankrijk een hugenoten verleden heeft, is het als Hollander toch vreemd om zo zuidelijk ineens voor zo’n kerk te staan.

Vlakbij deze kerk staat één van de vele fonteinen die er in Lourmarin staan. Deze is wel één van de leukste. De fontein heeft twee waterspuwers in de vorm van twee hoofden van mannen. De hoofden hebben twee baarden van mos en dat geeft een erg leuk effect.

Bekende inwoners

Als je door de straatjes van het dorp loopt en één van de vele galeries bezoekt dan wordt het je wel duidelijk dat hier veel kunstenaars wonen. Ook in het verleden was Lourmarin een geliefde plek voor creatieven om inspiratie op te doen. Beroemde schrijvers als Henri Bosco en Albert Camus hadden hier een huis.

Maar ook nu nog wonen er schrijvers. De meest bekende is de Brit Peter Mayle die bekend is van zijn boek ‘A good year’. Het boek speelt zich af in Menerbes maar is verfilmd in Gordes. De film is trouwens een prima manier om een regenachtige winterdag in Nederland door te komen. Het succes van de boeken van Mayle heeft wel tot gevolg gehad dat een groot deel van het Engelssprekende deel van de wereldbevolking de Luberon als toerist wil bezoeken.

Combe de Lourmarin

Vlakbij het dorp ligt de Combe de Lourmarin. Dit is de geologische grens tussen de Grand- en Petit Luberon. Het vrij smalle dal, of kloof eigenlijk, wordt de basis van een spectaculair landschap met hoge rotsen. Als het niet al te heet is, dan is een wandeling naar deze kloof een aanrader.
