Pujols ligt prachtig op een berg boven de Lot, met een prachtig uitzicht op de stad Villeneuve-sur-Lot dat drie kilometer verder ligt. De ingang van het dorp is een poort en verraadt de militaire functie die het mooie Franse dorp in het verleden heeft gehad. Goed voor drie sterren.

Pujols heeft een lange geschiedenis die teruggaat tot de Romeinse tijd. Op de plek waar nu het dorp ligt, bouwden de Romeinen al een fort. Een begrijpelijke keuze want het dorpje ligt bovenop een steile heuvel waar je de hele Lot vallei kan overzien, strategisch dus dik in orde.

Echt heftig werd het in de twaalfde eeuw toen Pujols een bolwerk van de Katharen was. Deze ketters bewandelden een zijweg van het christelijk geloof en dat beviel de Paus in Rome slecht.

Na het sturen van een contingent monniken om de mensen in het zuiden van Frankrijk op andere gedachten te brengen, werd er uiteindelijk opgeroepen tot een kruistocht.

De adel in het noorden van Frankrijk had op dat moment toch niets te doen en besloot aan de oproep van de Heilige Vader gehoor te geven. Het resultaat was een orgie van geweld en veel buit voor de noordelijke ridders.

Pujols lag midden in de frontlinie van deze oorlog en werd belegerd door de kruisridders om vervolgens geplunderd te worden. Door de strategische ligging werd de burcht in de dertiende eeuw hersteld en overleefde het de Honderdjarige Oorlog tegen Engeland. Veel huizen in het dorp stammen nog uit die tijd.

De ingang van het dorp ligt echt fenomenaal boven op de berg waardoor je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over het dal. Hoewel de weg er loopt besloten wij daar te picknicken en van het uitzicht te genieten. Als je niet langs de weg wilt zitten en je het uitzicht wel gezien hebt, zijn er in het dorp zelf ook genoeg plekjes om van je stokbrood te genieten.

De vijftiende eeuwse poort is tevens de klokkentoren van het kerkje dat er vlak naast staat. Dit kerkje is opgedragen aan de ons welbekende Sint Nicolaas. Eenmaal door de poort proef je direct de sfeer van een ommuurde vesting, de intimiteit van een kleine wereld. De straatjes zijn voor een oud dorp vrij breed en bebouwd met prachtige huisjes. De inwoners van het dorpje zijn zich hier ook van bewust en doen hun best om de straatjes goed te onderhouden en vol te zetten met bloemen. Dat komt de sfeer ten goede en het is heerlijk om door de kleine straatjes te slenteren.

Kerkje Saint Foy

Naast de kapel van Sinterklaas bij de entree van het dorp, heeft Pujols nog een kerkje. Deze staat aan de andere kant van de berg. Het voormalig kerkhof is open voor publiek. Dit is een charmante plek met lavendel en een prachtig uitzicht over het dal achter het dorpje. Het kerkje zelf is opgedragen aan de heilige Foy, die we kennen uit Conques maar die oorspronkelijk uit deze omgeving kwam. Het verhaal van deze plaatselijke heilige vind je bij het artikel over Conques op deze site. De kerk is gebouwd in de zestiende eeuw en heeft binnen mooie fresco’s uit die tijd. Helaas was het kerkje niet open toen wij het dorpje bezochten. De groene gids leert ons dat het pas na drie uur ‘s middags zijn deuren opent voor het publiek.

Van de voormalige vesting zijn nog een aantal zaken terug te vinden in het dorp. De meest opvallende is het kasteel dat zich aan de oostkant bevindt. Tevens zijn er nog resten van de oude muur te ontdekken, waarvan een vervallen poort het mooist is. Helaas is het kasteel niet te bezichtigen maar dat mag de pret niet drukken.

Markt

Op zondagochtend is het markt in Pujols en dat is altijd een leuk moment om zo’n ‘Plus Beaux Village’ te bezoeken. Bij ons bezoek waren de dorpelingen druk met een soort van kunstmarkt. Het zal je ook niet verbazen dat ook in Pujols de nodige kunstenaars wonen die op hun waren aan het verkopen waren. De hele zomer is er trouwens wel iets te doen, van brocante tot een feest van de kleuren. Klinkt goed allemaal en ik krijg terwijl ik dit schrijf onmiddellijk zin om naar Frankrijk te gaan.

Ook voor het eten zit je wel goed in dit dorp. Pujols heeft verschillende restaurantjes en de streek staat bekend om zijn fruit, in het bijzonder pruimen. Die kan je in alle soorten en maten en op veel verschillende manieren in het dorp nuttigen. Bij een rondrit in de streek troffen we zelfs een pruimen-museum aan!

In de omgeving

Op nog geen drie kilometer ligt Villeneuve-sur-Lot. Een voormalige vestingstad met een streng stratenpatroon en leuke pleintjes en straatjes. Fraai is ook het dorp Casseneuil langs de Lot. Eén van onze gidsen sprak over het ‘Venetië aan de Lot’. Dat is een beetje overdreven maar het is een mooi dorp.

Omdat het plots hard begon te regenen nadat we Pujols hadden bezocht, zijn wij met de kinderen naar de grot van Lastournelles gegaan. Een mooie grot met een beetje verouderde entree inclusief vervallen midget-golf en andere roestige attracties in de speeltuin. Daar hou ik wel van.
