Rodemack ligt op een steenworp van de grens van Luxemburg in het noordoosten van Frankrijk. Het dorp in Lotharingen is geheel ommuurd en heeft een poort met twee prachtige ronde torens. Rodemack is de ideale stopplaats op weg naar het zuiden.

Het dorp Mosset is gebouwd op een berg in het woeste landschap van de Pyreneeën ten westen van Perpignan. Het dorp is echt een plaatje en lijkt te zijn gemaakt voor een ansichtkaart. Desondanks is Mosset nog niet ontdekt door het massatoerisme waardoor je in de steile straatjes de sfeer van het dorp nog kan ontdekken.

Vanaf de stichting in 1090 is Villefranche de Conflent een vesting geweest. Het dorp ligt ook op een strategische plek tussen de hoge rotsen en de plek waar de rivieren Têt en Cady bij elkaar komen. De militaire waarde van het stadje was eeuwenlang groot. Nog in de negentiende eeuw zijn de vestingmuren vernieuwd en vergroot. Napoleon III was de laatste die opdracht gaf om Villefranche de Conflent nog eens flink onder handen te nemen. Daarover later meer.

Pujols ligt prachtig op een berg boven de Lot, met een prachtig uitzicht op de stad Villeneuve-sur-Lot dat drie kilometer verder ligt. De ingang van het dorp is een poort en verraadt de militaire functie die het mooie Franse dorp in het verleden heeft gehad. Goed voor drie sterren.

Fourcès bezochten wij op een zeer warme dag. Die heb je nog weleens in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk en ik ben er dol op. Het dorp bevindt zich in het mooie, maar niet echt spectaculaire, Armagnac. Deze vruchtbare streek ligt ten zuiden van Bordeaux en wordt al heel lang bewoond. Door de rijke geschiedenis is de Armagnac bezaaid met kastelen en mooie dorpen, niet zelden nog geheel ommuurd. Fourcès is ongetwijfeld één van de mooiste en wij geven het dorp drie sterren.

Larressingle doet denken aan Carcassonne, maar dan in het klein. Bovendien is het nog helemaal origineel en dat kan je van Carcassonne niet helemaal zeggen. De muren van deze kleine vesting zijn nog volledig intact en dat geeft het dorpje in de Gers een unieke middeleeuwse sfeer. Dat is genoeg voor vijf sterren. Een bijzonder mooi Frans dorp dus dat een bezoek meer dan waard is.

Yèvre-le-Châtel ligt ongeveer tachtig kilometer onder Parijs en ondanks de nabijheid van deze metropool, straalt het dorp alles uit wat het platteland van Frankrijk zo aantrekkelijk maakt. Er heerst rust zonder dat je het idee hebt dat je in een uithoek van de wereld zit. Wij hadden het geluk om hier een week een gîte te kunnen huren, midden in het dorp met een tuin op het terras van een dertiende eeuwse burcht. Goed voor drie sterren.

In La Couvertoirade waan je jezelf in de middeleeuwen. Het geheel ommuurde dorp is totaal autovrij en heeft zeer sfeervolle nauwe straatjes en prachtige monumenten. Wat mij het meest is bijgebleven, is het kleine kerkje met kerkhof met Tempeliersgraven.
