Fourcès bezochten wij op een zeer warme dag. Die heb je nog weleens in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk en ik ben er dol op. Het dorp bevindt zich in het mooie, maar niet echt spectaculaire, Armagnac. Deze vruchtbare streek ligt ten zuiden van Bordeaux en wordt al heel lang bewoond. Door de rijke geschiedenis is de Armagnac bezaaid met kastelen en mooie dorpen, niet zelden nog geheel ommuurd. Fourcès is ongetwijfeld één van de mooiste en wij geven het dorp drie sterren.

Armagnac is een vrij rustige streek die in de zomer niet door buitenlanders wordt overspoeld. Dat wil niet zeggen dat de streek niet op toeristen is ingericht. Er is genoeg te zien en zo heeft Armagnac een mooie balans tussen rust, leuke dorpen, mooie kastelen en natuur.

Fourcès is een mooi voorbeeld van een interessant en charmant dorp. Het dorp is gebouwd rondom het centrale plein. Het ronde plein wordt omgeven door vakwerkhuizen met arcaden van steen of hout. Hierdoor en door de bomen die in het midden van het plein staan, is er heerlijk veel schaduw en is het een perfecte plek om te lunchen. Wij hebben meestal stokbrood, wat kaas en / of ham bij ons voor een eenvoudige lunch, maar er zijn op het plein ook restaurants waar je wat kan nuttigen.

Charme van de Armagnac

Fourcès is oorspronkelijk een Engels dorp dat in de dertiende eeuw is gesticht op de oever van de rivier Auzoue. De toenmalige Engelse regering had een behoorlijk meningsverschil met de toenmalige Franse regering. Een groot deel van het zuidwesten van Frankrijk behoorde in deze tijd bij Engeland en om dit zo te houden bouwden de Engelse koningen burchten en kastelen. Ook in Fourcès stond een kasteel en het huidige dorpsplein volgt waarschijnlijk de contouren van deze vesting.

Het dorp moest de Engelse bezittingen in de Gascogne beschermen en daarom was het dorp geheel ommuurd. Hoewel de muur grotendeels is verdwenen zijn delen daarvan nog wel te herkennen. De Tour d’horloge was een onderdeel van de vesting.

Vandaag de dag zijn er in het dorp naast wat restaurantjes vooral galleries en ambachtelijke ateliers te vinden.

De streek rondom Fourcès

Fourcès ligt in een mooie omgeving en je kan het dorp prima gebruiken als startpunt voor een wandeling door de directe omgeving van het dorp. Bij het Office de Tourisme zijn de routes van een aantal wandeltochten te krijgen.

In de omgeving

Niet ver van Fourcès ligt het prachtige Larressingle. Deze ‘Plus Beaux Village’ is zeker een bezoek waard. Vlakbij ligt er een opgraving van een Romeinse villa in Séviac. Een interessant complex met prachtig mozaïek en een badhuis. Ook Condom, de hoofdstad van de Armagnac is een bezoek waard.
