In de vallei in het noorden van de Auvergne waar drie rivieren bij elkaar komen is Blesle gebouwd en dat is natuurlijk goede plek dat in het verleden voorspoed opleverde en nu goed is voor mooie plaatjes. Het dorp kende zijn bloeitijd vanaf de twaalfde eeuw en er staan nog redelijk veel huizen en gebouwen uit die tijd. Dat maakt het een aangename plek om een middag of een ochtend te verblijven. In dit dorp vind je tal van mooie plekje waar je de rijke geschiedenis bijna kan voelen.

Het landschap nodigt uit voor een mooie wandeling en omdat Blesle op pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostela ligt kan je een stukje meelopen.

Wij bezochten Blesle aan het einde van een warme middag en hebben ons daar prima vermaakt. Niet super maar dat had te maken met een druk programma. Eerder die dag bezochten wij Lavaudieu dat iets ten oosten van het dorp ligt en dat had zijn impact. Mijn reisgenoten waren moe en voelden er eigenlijk niet veel voor om nog een dorp te gaan bekijken. Het aanbod van een lekker ijsje werd achterin de auto wel aangenomen maar het zorgde er niet voor het gehoopte enthousiasme dit mooie dorp in de Auvergne te gaan verkennen.

Het was de tweede helft van juli en het landschap was langzaam aan het bijkomen van de hitte die de hele dag had geregeerd. Wij parkeerden de auto aan het begin van het dorp waar voldoende parkeerplaatsen zijn. De airco van onze donkerblauwe Opel deed het de hele vakantie al niet en op een namiddag als deze gaf dat een extra dimensie het humor aan de net puberende achterban.

Na een wat aandringen liepen we het dorp in waar het in de schaduw van de huizen een aangenaam koel was. De hoofdstraat van Blesle is niet echt wat je noemt een drukke winkelstraat maar dat wil je ook niet in zo’n dorp. Het staat er wel lekker vol met mooie huizen en er hing een heerlijke slome sfeer waardoor je vanzelf langzamer gaat lopen.

Hutjes uit de ijzertijd

Het dorp is ooit ontstaan rondom een Benedictijnse abdij die is gesticht aan het einde van negende eeuw maar deze plek wordt al veel langer bewoond. Even ten noorden van Blesle, bij Chadecol, staan op een heuvel een aantal hutjes die zijn gebouwd zoals dat in de bronstijd normaal was. Dat is ongeveer 4.000 jaar geleden en hoewel ze lijken op de huisjes die ook in bij Gordes staan maar onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat deze bouwsels uit de ijzertijd afkomstig zijn en dat maakt ze toch zeker de helft minder oud. Het is echter niet onwaarschijnlijk dat deze plek al veel langer werd bewoond.

Romeinen

Duidelijk is wel dat de huisjes na de komst van de Romeinen zijn verlaten. Het onderwerpen van Gallië was dan wel een gewelddadig klusje maar in de periode daarna heerste lang een interne vrede. Voor de inwoners van de nederzetting nabij Blesle was het daarom niet meer nodig om te wonen op een goed verdedigbare heuvel waar je de dagelijkse boodschappen allemaal naar boven moet slepen. En dus werd er massaal verhuist naar een beter gelegen plek langs het water in de vallei waar nu de kapel van Alagnon staat.

Op deze plek aan de oostkant van het huidige dorp zijn Gallo-Romeinse resten opgegraven en alles wijst erop dat hier tussen de eerste en derde eeuw de plek was om te wonen. Waarom deze plek precies is verlaten is niet bekend maar de chaos direct na de val van het Romeinse Rijk zal hier ongetwijfeld een rol heeft gespeeld.

Na de derde eeuw ging het licht uit in de omgeving van Blesle. De oude huizen die in de ijzertijd waren gebouwd werden waarschijnlijk gebruikt als schuilplaats voor herders maar feitelijk weten we niet heel veel over deze tijd. Tot de negende eeuw toen de Benedictijners hier een abdij stichten.

Benedictijnse abdij

De abdij was alleen voor vrouwen en is gesticht door Ermengarde van Auvergne. En dat is niet zomaar iemand, zeker in de negende eeuw. Ermengarde is één van de belangrijkste vrouwen van Frankrijk. Zij was de moeder van Willem de Vrome van Aquitanië die later in de tiende eeuw het machtige klooster van Cluny stichtte. Politiek en het geestelijk leven gingen hand in hand toendertijd en door het stichten van kloosters was een manier om je macht te laten gelden. In Blesle is dat goed te zien want de abdis was ook de heer van het gebied, of dame is dit geval.

Hoe dan ook bleek dit een goede zet want Blesle bloeide op en trok steeds meer mensen. Het succes trok ook de aandacht van de machtige baronnen van Mercoeur. Deze edellieden lieten het kaas niet van de brood eten en wilden graag ook delen in het succes van Blesle. Adel was voor het bestuur van het land, de kloosters moesten zich maar bemoeien met het zielenheil.

De heren besloten in de elfde eeuw dan ook doodleuk een vesting te bouwen in het dorp. Het donjon van deze vesting staat er nog altijd en je hem bezichtigen. Met de bouw van het kasteel begon een eeuwenlang conflict tussen de baronnen en de nonnen. De baron werd gesteund door de koning, de nonnen door de paus en zo kon de strijd eindeloos duren. Uiteindelijk kwam er een akkoord waarin de edelman de abdij en haar bezittingen beschermde.

Abdij kerk

Ondanks deze strijd kende het dorp tijdens de late middeleeuwen een goed tijd. Het inwonersaantal ging naar recordhoogte en de handel floreerde. Deze bloeiperiode is nog goed te zien in Blesle want naast de vesting en een aantal mooie huizen is er ook een prachtige kerk te bewonderen. Hij is gebouwd in Romaanse stijl en je moet hem een klein beetje zoeken. De kerk staat een beetje ingebouwd tussen de huizen in aan de zijkant van een pleintje dat ook niet heel opvallend is.

Om de oude abdijkerk binnen te komen moet je vanaf de hoofdstraat door een steeg om de kerk heen lopen maar dat is absoluut de moeite waard. Het interieur is namelijk voor een groot deel nog gekleurd. Het plafond van het koor en de zijkapel zijn prachtig blauw geschilderd en dat geeft de kerk een hele aparte sfeer. Het koor omvat kapitelen van fabeldieren en andere bizarre voorstellingen.

Karolingisch

De linkerkant van de kerk is voor deel nog Karolingisch en ook hier zijn, als je goed kijkt, raadselachtige taferelen te vinden. Hier is ook een altaar van marmer dat zou zijn geschonken door de paus in de negende eeuw te bewonderen. Neem even de tijd om dit allemaal goed tot je te nemen. Bijzonder is ook de kerkschat die bestaat uit gewaden en een Maria op een troon uit de dertiende eeuw.

Na ons bezoek van deze bijzondere kerk schrokken we toch weer even van de hitte buiten. Zo’n kerk uit de dertiende eeuw is een koele oase zonder airco; duurzaam en je krijgt er bovendien geen droge keel van. Terwijl wij op een bankje naast de kerk aan de hoge temperatuur begonnen te wennen haalden de kinderen een ijsje bij de Alimentation op het pleintje. Ze kwamen terug met een twee dozen Magnums en die waren heerlijk.

Wandelen

In het dorp is het heerlijk wandelen en voor wie wat verder wil biedt de directe omgeving ook genoeg. Het landschap is gevormd door vulkanen en heeft een ondergrond van basalt. In de buurt van het dorp vind je dan ook de typische basalt orgels.
