Gordes is een dorp met een natuurlijke schoonheid waar je niet omheen kunt. Ook de toeristenindustrie weet dit maar al te goed en het plaatsje in de Vaucluse is ‘s zomers ook compleet gevuld met buitenlanders. Toch is de schoonheid van dit dorp zo groot dat het van ons vijf sterren krijgt. Er heen dus maar dan wel het liefst in het voor- of naseizoen. Kan je echt alleen in de zomer, dan is het dorp in juli nog net te doen, ga in augustus alleen in de avond.

Mocht God bestaan dan woont Hij in de Provence, of misschien in Toscane. En als dat zo is dan heeft Hij zeker een huis in Gordes. Dit dorp in de Vaucluse is werkelijk prachtig en, als je er bent geweest, dan is Gordes één van de dorpen waaraan je denkt als je ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages’ uitspreekt.

In de omgeving van Gordes liggen trouwens wel meer mooie dorpen, maar dit is toch wel de bekendste en eerlijk gezegd ook de mooiste. Als Nederlander wil je hier een huis bezitten, waar je altijd heen kan om te genieten van het weer, de natuur en het eten. Alleen nog even het budget regelen.

Het dorp is al meer dan eens het decor geweest van een film. De bekendste is wel ‘A good year‘. Een mooi gemaakte film die je het best kan kijken op een regenachtige zondagmiddag. Je voelt je dan direct een stukje beter.

De mooiste route om Gordes te benaderen is vanaf het zuiden. Neem de D2 en sla af op de D15. Vanaf deze bochtige weg laat het plaatsje zich af en toe zien en zal je als chauffeur je niet moeten laten afleiden door het uitzicht. Het laatste stukje naar het dorp maakt de weg een lange slinger waardoor je een prachtig uitzicht hebt op het dorp. In het dorp rij je direct een plein op met het kasteel. Aangezien het nogal druk kan zijn, moet je de auto iets verder in het dorp kwijt zien te raken. Moeilijk is dat niet want er zijn parkeerplaatsen genoeg, wel allemaal betaald trouwens.

Naast filmploegen zijn er in Gordes ook in de loop van de tijd tal van kunstenaars neergestreken. Als je door de straatjes loopt dan kom je veel winkeltjes tegen waar kunst en kunstzinnige zaken worden aangeboden. Als je goed zoekt en je niet gek laten maken door je vakantiegevoel kan je hier ook echt iets moois vinden.

Eten kan je in Gordes ook prima. Er zijn genoeg restaurantjes te vinden en in een steegje tegenover het kasteel vind je een redelijk goede bakker. De prijzen zijn heel toeristisch, maar ach.

Om de drukte een beetje te ontvluchten, loop je via de kerk naar beneden. De nauwe straatjes zijn soms best stijl, maar het is de moeite waard om even naar beneden te lopen, want daar wacht een mooi uitzicht op het dal. Wie doorloopt komt zelfs een klein openluchttheater tegen.

Kerkje

De kerk is somber van buiten maar verrassend kleurrijk van binnen. Het is voor een 21ste-eeuwer even wennen, maar in de middeleeuwen zagen alle kerken er van binnen erg kleurrijk uit. Het idee van schoonheid van witte beelden en stenen is typisch iets van deze tijd. In de middeleeuwen was een kerkbezoek één groot feest voor de ogen. Te meer omdat kleuren in het dagelijks leven niet veel voorkwamen. Het was gewoon te duur.

Kasteel

Het op het centrale plein gelegen kasteel stamt uit de zestiende eeuw. In de twintigste eeuw werd het bewoond door de kunstenaar Victor Vasarely. Maar voor een overzicht van zijn werk kan je beter doorrijden naar Aix en Provence en het Foundation Vasarely bezoeken. Nu vind je er een museum met werken van de Vlaamse kunstenaar Pol Mara. Moderne kunst in een zestiende eeuws kasteel, het kan en het klopt ook allemaal in Gordes.

Village des Bories

Onderaan de berg ligt de Village des Bories, een negentiende eeuws dorp waar de woningen zijn opgetrokken in een stijl die werd gebruikt rond 5.000 v Chr. Het geeft een goed idee hoe de mensen in de Provence leefden in de prehistorie.

In de omgeving

In de Vaucluse verveel je je nooit. Wie in Gordes is, mag zichzelf niet een bezoek aan de Abdij van Sénanque ontzeggen.  Dit cisterzienzer klooster is nog altijd in gebruik en ligt in een prachtige kloof vol met lavendelvelden. Iets verder ligt de Gorges de la Nesque. Niet zo enorm als de Gordes de Verdon, maar als je toch in de buurt bent, zeker het omrijden waard.
