Fransen zijn een trots volk en hoewel er enorme regionale verschillen zijn, bestaat er zeker iets van een nationale identiteit. Als het goed gaat, staan ze massaal achter ‘Les Bleus’ en als het minder gaat kunnen ze als geen ander klagen over de mentaliteit van de volgevreten voetballers. Wacht eens even, dit patroon herken ik toch ook wel bij ons.

Maar goed, buiten het voetballen is eten en drinken heel belangrijk in Frankrijk. Wat er wordt gegeten verschilt per streek maar overal vind je dezelfde passie en aandacht voor het eten. Daarnaast is ook de manier hoe het eten wordt beleefd belangrijk en wie ooit eens op een zomeravond een dorpje is binnengewandeld, heeft misschien kennis gemaakt met het fenomeen ‘marché nocturne’; Alle inwoners van het dorp zitten aan lange tafels van het lekkers uit de streek te genieten. In Frankrijk is het verplicht om een milieusticker op je auto te hebben die aangeeft hoe milieubelastend die is. Heb je geen sticker op je auto en rij in een milieuzone, dan riskeer je een boete van 68 euro. Een sticker hoef je maar één keer per auto aan te schaffen. Het bestellen van de sticker is niet moeilijk maar ik liep wel tegen een browserprobleem aan. Als je al in Frankrijk bent dan is er geen man over boord, je kan alles online doen en met een voorlopig bewijs die je per e-mail ontvangt zit je goed.

Het is even oppassen deze zomer in Frankrijk. Met de auto althans want net voor de Nederlandse invasie van Frankrijk begint wordt de maximale snelheid verlaagd. Kon je vroeger buiten de bebouwde kom heerlijk doorrijden met negentig kilometer per uur, vanaf 1 juli mag je nog maar tachtig. Eigenlijk hoef je als Nederlander niet eens goed op te letten want in Nederland geldt dezelfde snelheid, we zouden er aangewend moeten zijn. Op de snelweg blijven de snelheden zo als ze waren; 130 en 110 bij regen.

In juli begint de jaarlijkse volksverhuizing naar het zuiden van Europa. Voor meer dan 1,3 miljoen Nederlanders betekent dit een autoreis naar Frankrijk en wie ooit door het Franse land heeft gereden weet dat de tolpoortjes nooit ver zijn. Deze zijn niet gratis, maar hoeveel kost het eigenlijk om naar onze vakantiebestemming te rijden? Eten is in Frankrijk een belangrijk onderdeel van de cultuur en één van de reden voor ons om er vakantie te vieren. Toch kom je soms curieuze culinaire zaken tegen waar je op zijn minst je wenkbrauwen van optrekt. Zo kwamen we de afgelopen jaren een automaat tegen waar je kaas kan kopen, eentje waar je ruwe melk kan tappen en een pizza kan kopen.

Frankrijk heeft van alle landen in West-Europa waarschijnlijk de meest verschillende landschappen en wij hebben er al veel gezien. Nu krijg ik weleens de vraag wat ik het mooiste gebied vind en daar heb ik eigenlijk geen goed antwoord op. Daarom heb ik een lijst gemaakt van landschappen die volgens mij de moeite waard zijn om eens te gaan bezoeken. Dit zijn volgens mij de streken met het mooiste natuurschoon. Daarbij heb ik wel een voorliefde van bergen en het moet gezegd worden dat ik (nog) niet in Bretagne en Corsica ben geweest. Ik heb zo het vermoeden dat deze regio’s ook op dit lijstje horen. Hierbij mijn lijst van de mooiste landschappen in willekeurige volgorde.

Frankrijk is een prachtig land waar je je uitstekend kan vermaken. Het land is echter niet heel goedkoop. Boodschappen zijn bijvoorbeeld iets duurder dan in Nederland maar daar staat tegenover dat benzine en restaurants weer iets goedkoper zijn. Musea, kastelen, dierentuinen, attractieparken en andere bezienswaardigheden zijn over het algemeen niet duur vergeleken met Nederland, maar voor veel moet je toch wel iets betalen.

Frankrijk is natuurlijk een fantastisch land om vakantie te vieren. De cultuur, de geschiedenis, het klimaat, de landschappen en natuurlijk het eten zorgen ervoor dat wij het er altijd goed naar onze zin hebben. Maar één van de leukste dingen in Frankrijk zijn volgens mij de enorme supermarkten. Sommige zijn groter dan de binnenstad van een flinke Nederlandse stad en ze verkopen er zo’n beetje alles. Ze zijn open tot ’s avonds laat en op zondag meestal tot een uur of twaalf in de middag.

Een roodharige provinciegenoot van zo’n vier generaties geleden. Balancerend op het snijvlak van genialiteit en gekte. Bipolariteit is de diagnose die ze nu zouden stellen.
Ik was hem al weer bijna vergeten tot onze vakantie van 2008. Na jaren op verre vakanties te zijn geweest, gingen we –met ons pasgeboren dochter- weer op pad naar La douce France. De Provence was ons reisdoel. Net als vroeger met onze ouders gingen we nu ook weer ‘op reep’ zoals we dat in Brabant noemen, oftewel lekker struinen in stadjes en dorpen. Nederlanders en Fransen hebben niet heel veel gemeen, maar onze liefde voor kaas is toch iets wat ons verbindt. Liefhebbers van kaas, en wie is dat niet, kan zijn hart ophalen in de Bourgogne. Naast tal van lokale soorten komen er drie AOC kazen uit deze streek. En dat is geen slechte score want er zijn slechts 45 van dit soort kazen. Er zijn natuurlijk veel meer soorten kazen in Frankrijk, maar die hebben geen appelation. Bourgondië heeft er dus drie en die moet je eten als je de streek bezoekt. Hier vind je een beschrijving van de Epoisses, de Langres, de Chaource en nog handvol andere Bourgondische kazen die de moeite waard zijn om te proberen.
