Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is een langgerekt dorp dat is gebouwd in een kloof van het riviertje Les Verdus. De weg naar het dorp loopt langs de Gorge de Hérault en dat is een mooie route naar het dorp. Het dorp rekt zich uit door een kloof. De straatjes zijn smal met veel winkeltjes.

Saint Guilhem le Désert is gebouwd rond een abdij die in het begin van de negende eeuw is gesticht door één van de ridders van Karel de Grote. En niet zo maar één: Guilhem, de achterkleinzoon van Karel Martel. Hij werd opgevoed aan het hof van de koning en was dus een soort van jeugdvriend van de toekomstige keizer.

Samen met Karel versloeg hij de Moren bij Nîmes en joeg ze terug over de Pyreneeën. Guilhem was blijkbaar een gelovig man en stichtte het klooster Gellone waar de Les Verdus uitmondt in de Hérault, nog altijd een unieke plek. Na deze krijgstocht keerde hij naar huis, waar hij erachter kwam dat zijn vrouw inmiddels was overleden.

De arme man besloot zich terug te trekken in zijn nieuwe klooster maar Karel himself stak hier een stokje voor en riep hem op voor diensten aan zijn hof. Noblesse oblige en Guilhem gaf gehoor aan de oproep van zijn heer. Na een paar jaar trouwe dienst kreeg hij als beloning een aantal belangrijke titels waaronder één die ons bekend voorkomt: de Prins van Oranje (Orange). Daarnaast kreeg hij van Karel de relieken van het heilige kruis voor in zijn klooster. De laatste jaren van zijn leven leefde hij in het klooster waar hij ook overleed.

Van het klooster uit de negende eeuw is weinig meer over. In de elfde en twaalfde eeuw werd het namelijk een populair bedevaartsoord en woonden er ruim honderd monniken. Dat bracht het nodige budget met zich mee, wat de bouwlust behoorlijk opwekte. Dit resulteerde in de huidige gebouwen die zeer de moeite waard zijn om eens goed te bekijken.

Winkeltjes

Hoewel het dorp vrij klein is, kent het genoeg kleine en nauwe straatjes met gezellige winkeltjes met het bekende toeristische aanbod. Ook voor een hapje en een drankje ben je hier aan het goede adres. Vooral rondom het centrale plein bij de kerk, Place de Liberté, zijn er genoeg leuke tentjes.

Op het plein staat een enorme boom en een fontein en het heeft genoeg schaduwrijke plekjes om even van een versnapering te genieten.

In de Omgeving

De streek boven Montpellier is hoger dan je denkt en biedt voldoende vertier. Zo zijn er tal van grotten te vinden. Wij hebben die van Abime de Bramabiau bezocht. Dit is een spectaculaire tocht door een zeer smalle maar hoge grot. De entree is al heel bijzonder, want die begint vlak naast een waterval. Water is er ook in overvloed in deze streek. Hoewel de grond droog en dor is, stromen er wilde rivieren waar je prachtige kanotochten op kan maken.

Ook spectaculair is de Cirque de Navacelles, een enorm keteldal die is gevormd door een gletsjer. Het dal heeft de vorm van een hoefijzer en in het midden ligt een klein gehucht. Tot slot ligt natuurlijk La Couvertoirade om de hoek, de andere Les Plus Beaux in dit gebied met weer een hele andere geschiedenis.
