In de Luberon zijn er genoeg ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Niet vreemd want het is een fantastische streek met inderdaad veel schilderachtige dorpjes. Roussillon vormt hier geen uitzondering op maar heeft naast een gezellig dorpscentrum nog een unieke attractie: de grootste okermijn van Europa. En dat is voldoende voor vier sterren.

Wie graag dorpjes bezoekt, maar ook rekening heeft te houden met de volgende generatie op de achterbank, heeft met Roussillon een uitermate goede troef in handen. Dankzij de okermijn bij het dorp is een bezoek voor iedereen een leuk uitje. Ook pubers zullen zich, tijdelijk, goed vermaken met een wandeling door de unieke okermijn.

Oker is een pigment dat bijna niet voorkomt in de natuur. Het wordt gebruikt om kleur aan te maken en schilders maken er hun verf mee. Zo wordt in de verfmolen De Kat op de Zaanse Schans nog altijd oker uit Roussillon gebruikt om verf te maken. We weten dat dit pigment uit de Luberon ook door de Hollandse Meesters in de zeventiende eeuw werd gebruikt. Het is vrijwel zeker dat Rembrandt zijn verf maakte met oker uit deze mijn. Om maar iemand te noemen.

Romeinen
Maar hier wordt al veel langer oker gewonnen. De Romeinen waren hier al druk met het pigment en ook zij gebruikte het oker om kleur te geven aan tal van zaken. En dit is eigenlijk nooit meer opgehouden. Je kan dus gerust zeggen dat heel veel Europese kunst is gemaakt met het spul dat hier uit de grond komt.

De wandeling door de mijn, of groeve, duurt ongeveer een uur en leidt je door diepe kuilen, halve grotten en bizarre half afgegraven bossen. Trek voor deze wandeling niet je pas aangeschafte maatpak van Armani aan, want je wordt ongetwijfeld stoffig en omdat het stof pigment bevat krijg je het ook zeer moeilijk uit je kleren.

Voor kinderen is het een feest om de mijn te bezoeken. Ze kunnen er heerlijk rennen door dit bizarre landschap. Onze kinderen vonden het fantastisch.

Wij bezochten Roussillon en de mijn samen met een ander gezin midden in de zomer. Een paar jaar later hebben hier even verderop ook de Tour de France nog voorbij zien rijden.

Het zal je niet verbazen dat het midden in augustus behoorlijk druk was in het dorp. Gelukkig is de okermijn groot genoeg om flink wat toeristen te herbergen zonder dat je daar nu echt last van hebt. De ingang van de mijn ligt een paar honderd meter van het dorp af en om erin te mogen moet je een klein bedrag betalen. Maar dat is absolute de moeite waard. Ten eerste is het best interessant om iets te leren over het pigment zelf, hoe het wordt gebruikt en hoe lang het al wordt gebruikt en door wie.

Unieke ervaring
Maar bovenal is de wandeling door de okermijn een unieke ervaring die je lang zal bijblijven. Je loopt door een uniek landschap dat half natuur en half door de mens is gemaakt. Hoewel het best groot is heeft het een aangename schaal waar je je nooit verdwaald in voelt.

En dan de kleuren. Vooral op de plekken waar het oker is afgegraven zijn de kleuren heel intens. De zomerzon maakte het tijdens ons bezoek nog eens extra kleurrijk waardoor de wandeling bij mij al een zeer bonte herinnering bijgebleven.

Het dorp

De wandeling is prima te doen voor iedereen die redelijk ter been is. Tijdens de tour kunnen kinderen lekker hun eigen gang gaan want veel gevaar is er niet, maar trek niet hun nieuwste kleren aan.

Het dorp
Na een wandeling in de okermijn is het tijd voor het dorpje. Het is er niet zo druk, wel gezellig en je vindt er natuurlijk een soort van museum over de oker en er zijn tal van leuke terrasjes te vinden waar je even wat kan drinken na de wandeling.

Het pleintje biedt genoeg afleiding om eens lekker te kijken genieten van een drankje en na te praten over de okermijn of andere belangrijke zaken van het leven. Het gemeentehuis is prachtig maar ook de andere huizen, die dateren uit de zeventiende eeuw, ademen een heerlijke sfeer.

Als je weer op adem bent, is een wandeling naar de kerk de moeite waard. Het straatje naar de kerk toe is één van de schilderachtigste die ik in Frankrijk heb gezien.

Hoewel Roussillon op Gordes na de meeste toeristen per jaar weet te trekken viel het qua drukte in het dorp zelf mij mee.
Er waren zeker wel mensen maar niet belachelijk veel. Ik heb het vermoeden dat de meeste toeristen alleen de okermijn gaan bekeken.

Jammer natuurlijk want het is een leuk dorpje maar de rust is natuurlijk ook wel fijn. Drink dus fijn een drankje op één van de terrassen na het bezoek naar de okermijn.

In de omgeving

Gordes ligt nog geen tien kilometer van Roussillon en dat dorp mag je niet missen als je in de buurt bent. Ook de Abdij van Sénanque is een must als je hier bent.
