Collonges la Rouge is een belangrijk dorp voor Les plus Beaux Villages de France. Het was de burgemeester van dit dorp die aan de hand van een boekje besloot een stichting op te richten om de mooiste dorpen van Frankrijk te kiezen. Belangrijk inderdaad, maar we hebben dit niet mee laten wegen bij de beoordeling van dit mooie dorp. Het dorp bij de Dordogne krijgt drie sterren.

Het meest opvallende aan Collonges la Rouge is dat bijna alle gebouwen zijn opgetrokken uit rood zandsteen. Dit geeft het mooie Franse dorp een typisch sfeertje, waarvan ik denk dat de middeleeuwen er zo uitzagen. Hetzelfde gevoel krijg ik bij Salers, ook daar heb je rode huizen maar dan van vulkanisch steen.

Het dorp ontstond in de achtste eeuw rondom een priorij. Een priorij is een dependance van een klooster, in dit geval van die van Charroux in de Poitou. Dat was in die tijd een machtig instituut. Rond de dertiende eeuw kreeg de priorij van Collonges la Rouge allerlei voorrechten van de burggraaf van Turenne. Al heb ik niet terug kunnen vinden welke rechten dit nu precies zijn geweest.

In de zestiende eeuw ontwikkelde het mooie dorp zich tot een soort vakantieplaats. De toenemende bestuurlijke elite van de burggraaf vond het een prima plek om ‘s zomers te verblijven. Dit ging gepaard met een toenemende bouwlust, waarvan de mooie huizen en de kleine kastelen die in het dorpje te vinden zijn getuigen.

Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is Castel de Vassinhac. Dit kasteeltje is gebouwd aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw door de toenmalige heer van het dorp. Het kasteel heeft mooie peperbustorentjes en is bedoeld als paleis. De schietgaten in de torens zijn dus niet voor de verdediging maar vooral voor de sier. Naast dit kasteel zijn er nog veel meer mooie panden in het dorpje te bewonderen.

Van de oorspronkelijke kerk uit de achtste eeuw is niets meer over. De huidige kerk stamt uit de elfde en twaalfde eeuw en is in de zestiende eeuw versterkt. Kennelijk was dat nodig in die tijd. Wij bezochten het dorp op een mooie zonnige dag in mei. Bij het benaderen van de kerk vielen er twee dingen direct op: de plompe Romaanse bouw van met name de kloeke klokkentoren én het tympaan boven de hoofdingang.

Dit tympaan is zeer eenvoudig van opzet en een goed voorbeeld van de Romaanse kunst in deze streek. Het heeft niet de dynamiek van dat in de Adbijkerk in Vézelay, maar wel een bepaalde schoonheid in zijn eenvoud. De geleerden zijn er niet helemaal over eens wat het precies voorstelt, maar de centrale figuur in het midden is Jezus. Wat verwacht je anders? Er is twijfel of de Heer nu opstijgt naar de hemel of dat hij juist terugkomt. Wie het weet mag het zeggen!

Bij het wandelen door het dorp zijn hier en daar nog overblijfselen te zien van de muur die de priorij heeft beschermd tegen allerlei gevaren van buitenaf. Zo zijn er nog een aantal poorten te vinden en hier en daar nog een toren. Samen met de mooie huizen geven de muren het dorp een uiterst intieme en charmante uitstraling. In de straatjes zijn hier en daar wat winkeltjes en een galerie te vinden.

Eten en drinken

Bij mooi weer, en dat heb je nog wel eens in deze streek, heeft Collonges la Rouge genoeg terrasjes waar de innerlijke mens goed aan zijn trekken kan komen. Waar ik altijd heel blij van word, zijn de restaurantjes met een terras dat niet direct aan de openbare weg ligt. Je loopt dan langs een muur waarachter zachte eetgeluiden te horen zijn. Soms gaan deze gepaard met de lekkerste geuren en als je voorbij bent gelopen en je werpt een blik naar achteren dan ontdek je net een inkijkje waar je de mensen achter de dampende schalen ziet genieten. Prachtig!
En reken maar dat het de moeite waard is wat er op tafel staat. Het dorp ligt in een streek met een zeer goede keuken. Een hoofdrol speelt hier de gans, met het door de Fransen zo geliefde foie gras, dat je eigenlijk niet mag eten wegens de zeer dieronvriendelijke productie, maar wat o zo lekker is.

Ganzenbord

De rol die de gans in dit gebied speelt, komt erg leuk tot uiting bij La Grange aux Oies, een reusachtige versie van het spel ganzenbord tussen notenbomen. Bij de ingang krijg je een dobbelsteen en wordt aan de hand van het spel de functie en geschiedenis van de gans in de streek uitgelegd. Het laatste vakje, nummer 63, bestaat uit een schuur waar heerlijke streekgerechten staan te wachten om te proeven. Erg leuk om met kinderen te doen.

Dankzij zijn ligging is Collonges la Rouge prima te bezoeken als je op doortocht bent. Als je niet zo ver meer hoeft op de A20 en je een uurtje kan missen, dan is het geknipt voor een tussenstop. Dat geeft een ultieme ‘weg langs de snelweg’ gevoel en veel beter dan zo’n dichtbevolkte aire.
