Het dorp Domme ligt mooi langs de rivier de Dordogne in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk. Het meest opvallende is de grot die letterlijk onder het dorp ligt. De ingang van de grot ligt midden op de marktplein. Maar ook de kerk, het kasteel en de prachtige omgeving met veel meer mooie dorpen in de buurt zijn een bezoek waard. De streek staat tevens bekend om de uitstekend keuken, dus ook de innerlijke mens hoeft zich hier niet te vervelen.

In de stromende juliregen bezochten we Domme. Niet echt weer om te genieten van één van de mooiste dorpen van Frankrijk, maar je moet toch wat met slecht weer tijdens de vakantie. Het dorp is niet moeilijk te vinden, wel moeilijk was de tocht naar een parkeerplaats. Het parcours leidt je door smalle straatjes waar je uiteindelijk een plaatsje voor de auto vindt.

Domme is zo’n typisch mooi dorp in de Perigord, zoals je veel mooie dorpen vindt in deze streek van Frankrijk. Mooie huizen van natuursteen en een prachtig uitzicht op de Dordogne. Zo hoort het! De centrale plek van het dorp is natuurlijk een plein waar hier niet de kerk, die een beetje aan de zijkant van het plein staat, maar een gebouw die toegang tot een grot herbergt de hoofdrol speelt.

De grot zelf is de moeite waard, niet groot maar wel mooi met veel stalagmieten en -tieten. De gids is charmant en spreekt ook Engels, al moet je haar daar zo nu en dan wel aan herinneren. Ach, Frans is ook goed natuurlijk. Leuk is het bordje aan het begin van de grot dat aangeeft dat onhandelbare kinderen niet welkom zijn. Minder leuk is dat bij de uitgang van de grot wel een lift is, maar dat deze het niet doet. Je moet dus zelf naar boven klimmen op de trappen. Zeker te doen, maar ik had wel wat te doen met de oude Engelse dame in de groep. Later zagen we haar door het dorpje lopen, ze heeft het dus gehaald!

Het dorpje zelf is authentiek en heeft mooie uitkijkplekken over de Dordogne. Er is bij de uitgang van de grot een kleine speelplaats. Een perfecte plek om de kinderen te laten spelen en zelf lekker een stokbroodje met kaas te nuttigen. Deze haal je bij de bakker op het centrale plein, dus voordat je de grot in gaat.

Op het plein bevindt zich ook een museum, maar daar zijn we niet in geweest. De hoofdstraat begint ook vanaf het plein en barst van de winkeltjes met plaatselijke producten, toeristische prullaria en leuke kunstige objecten. Dat doet het altijd goed bij de Nederlandse toeristen en de plaatselijke bevolking pikt zo ook een graantje mee.

Tot slot heeft Domme natuurlijk een burcht. Best een mooie, die al half tot een ruïne vervallen is. Wie een nieuw kasteel wil zien moet maar naar de Efteling. Het kasteel is wel compleet met een gevang waar de Tempelier ridders hun namen in de muren hebben gekrast. Dat geeft het geheel toch een historische dimensie.

In de omgeving

In de buurt van de Dordogne rijgen ze de mooie dorpen achter elkaar. Een paar kilometer stroomafwaarts vind je bijvoorbeeld al La Roque Gageac. Iets oostelijker ligt Sarlat, een van de mooiste steden van Frankrijk. Maar ook de Lot is niet ver weg en daar ligt Saint Cirq Lapopie, volgens de Fransen zelf het mooiste dorp van hun land. En wie na het bezoek van de grot in Domme de smaak te pakken heeft, kan zijn hart ophalen in deze streek. Vooral Gouffre de Padirac is een absolute aanrader!
