Larressingle doet denken aan Carcassonne, maar dan in het klein. Bovendien is het nog helemaal origineel en dat kan je van Carcassonne niet helemaal zeggen. De muren van deze kleine vesting zijn nog volledig intact en dat geeft het dorpje in de Gers een unieke middeleeuwse sfeer. Dat is genoeg voor vijf sterren. Een bijzonder mooi Frans dorp dus dat een bezoek meer dan waard is.

Larressingle vormde tijdens de honderdjarige oorlog een belangrijke vesting. De Engelsen hadden in die tijd het gebied vast in handen en het dorp vormde de verdediging van de Gascogne. Toch is het dorp nooit het toneel geweest van strijd en mede daarom is het nog geheel in tact. Voor ons is dat een uitstekende zaak want het dorp is klein maar het heeft een overvloed aan sfeer.

Nadat Fransen de Engelsen hadden verslagen verloor de burcht zijn functie. In de daarop volgende eeuwen raakte het plaatsje in verval. De sterke stenen muren werden door de dorpelingen gebruikt als steengroeve om hun eigen huizen te bouwen. En net als zoveel andere dorpen in Frankrijk werd het mooie dorp in de twintigste eeuw hersteld.

Het dorp herbergt een kasteel en een oude kerk. Hierin staat een interessant beeld van Saint-Sigismond. De beeldhouwer wist kennelijk niet precies hoe deze heilige er uitzag en heeft daarom maar een andere Franse held genomen als model; Vercingetorix. Het kerkje heeft door zijn dikke muren en kleine raampjes een aparte sfeer.

Naast het kasteel en de kerk omvat Larressingle niet heel veel huizen. In één van deze huizen is een museum ingericht waar aan de hand van kostuums de geschiedenis van het dorp wordt uitgelegd. De kleine straatjes en steegjes zijn mooi en wij vonden zelfs een heel klein openlucht theater achterin het dorp. Helaas was er geen voorstelling.

Vlak buiten het Middeleeuwse dorp is er een soort van Middeleeuws attractieparkje gebouwd. Hier kan je kennismaken met de oorlogsvoering uit de veertiende eeuw compleet met ridders, blijde, katapulten en belegeringstorens. Toen wij er waren was hij net dicht, maar het zag er leuk uit voor zowel volwassenen als kinderen.

Larressingle ligt midden in de Armagnac en kenners weten dan dat hier een lekkere drank wordt geproduceerd. Het dorp ligt tussen de druivenranken in waar de edele drank van wordt gemaakt. In de directe omgeving van Larressingle zijn voldoende plekken om Armagnac te proeven en aan te schaffen.

In de omgeving
Naast nog twee ‘Beaux Villages’ in de direct omgeving van Larressingle waaronder Fourcès, kwamen wij nog een bijzonder aardig historisch monument in vorm van een Romeinse Villa tegen. In Frankrijk noemen ze dat altijd een Gallo-Romeinse opgraving, maar het is natuurlijk gewoon Romeins. De villa ligt in Seviac in de richting van Montreal.
