Porquerolles is de grootste van de Îles d’Hyères, een eilandengroep heeft als bijnaam de Îles d’Or, ofwel de gouden eilanden gelegen even ten zuiden van Hyères in de Middellandse Zee. Dat is klinkt nogal pretentieus maar we hebben het hier wel over de Côte d’Azur waar alles een beetje overdreven is én laten we eerlijk zijn, ook vaak heel mooi. Porquerolles is dat zeker ook. Vlakbij de Middellandse Zee tussen Montpellier en de Camargue ligt de prachtige vestingstad Aigues-Mortes. De stad is in de middeleeuwen gebouwd is verbazingwekkend goed bewaard gebleven en trekt nu veel toeristen. Deze worden getrokken door de prachtige muren en de historische gebouwen en de gezellige sfeer op en rondom de pleinen.

De streek bij de grens tussen Frankrijk en Italië bij Menton heeft één van de meest dramatische landschappen die ik ken. Hier duiken vanaf het noorden de Alpen de Middellandse Zee in en dat zorgt voor een prachtig samenspel tussen de ruige bergen en het blauwe water van de zee. Hoog in dit landschap ligt Sainte-Agnès, een dorp met een uniek uitzicht over de zee en de bergen.
