De Luberon bulkt zo’n beetje van de mooie dorpen en het is dan ook moeilijk om Ménerbes tot mooiste uit te roepen. Toch lijkt het wel zeker dat het plaatsje een finaleplek zou veroveren bij zulk een verkiezing. Het is zeker een van de beroemdste. Bussen vol Amerikanen en Japanners bezoeken het dorpje.

Ménerbes was ook in het verleden al een populaire plek. De aanwezigheid van dolmens, Franse hunebedden, in de directe omgeving van het dorp wijst erop dat ook de prehistorische mens deze plek wist te waarderen. Altijd jammer dat die prehistorische lui moeilijk te dateren zijn, maar het is duidelijk dat ook in de Romeinse tijd Ménerbes werd bewoond.

De populariteit van de plek is niet zo raar. De berg waarop het dorp is gebouwd, geeft een goed uitzicht over het Luberon gebergte. Dat is niet alleen mooi, maar het is ook strategisch belangrijk, omdat je dan makkelijk je tegenstander ziet aankomen. Volgens Nostradamus, die in Aix woonde, heeft het dorp de vorm van een boot. Hoewel deze man wel meer dingen zag die anderen niet zagen, kan je met een beetje fantasie inderdaad in de vorm van het dorp een boot ontdekken.

Een beetje dorpje van aanzien in Frankrijk heeft natuurlijk kunstenaars binnen zijn gemeentegrenzen wonen. Zo ook in Ménerbes, waar verschillende kunstenaars en creatievelingen leefden, en niet de minste. Iemand als Picasso mocht hier graag komen, zijn muze Dora Maar woonde hier, en Nicolas de Staël had er een huis. Maar ook schrijvers als Albert Camus en Francois Nourissier waren inwoners van het dorp in de Vaucluse.

Klinkende namen waarvan je zou denken dat ze genoeg toeristen zouden trekken. Maar de echte doorbraak van Ménerbes kwam in de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw toen Peter Mayle het boek ‘A year in the Provence’ publiceerde. Het werd een internationale bestseller. Het boek vormt de basis van de film ‘A good year‘ met Russel Crowe in de hoofdrol. De film werd trouwens opgenomen in Gordes, dat niet zo ver hier vandaan ligt. Daarnaast werd het boek ook gebruikt voor een televisieserie.

Dankzij dit boek en de film stond Ménerbes in één keer op de toeristische wereldkaart en sindsdien rijden er bussen met Amerikanen en Japanners af en aan. Gelukkig niet toen wij Ménerbes op een dinsdagochtend in augustus bezochten.

Burgemeester

Een andere bekende inwoner van Ménerbes is de burgemeester: Yves Rousset-Rouard. Hij was de producent van de Emmanuelle films in het begin van de jaren zeventig, met natuurlijk ‘onze’ Sylvia Kristel in de hoofdrol.

Yves is een veelzijdig man, want naast het produceren van films en het zijn van een magistraat is hij tevens een verzamelaar van kurken. Net als postzegels lijkt het erop dat de kurk zich langzaam maar zeker uit ons leven aan het verwijderen is door het toedoen van die malle schroefdop die je ook steeds meer op Franse wijnflessen aantreft. De beste man verzamelde zo veel kurken dat er een museum voor is gemaakt; Musée du Tire-bouchon.

Voor de lekkerbekken is het zeker interessant om een kijkje te nemen in het Maison de la Truffe et du Vin. Hier is het mogelijk om meer te weten te komen over twee van de lokale lekkernijen, truffels en wijn. En hoewel wij er niet binnen zijn geweest, te veel kinderen, denk ik dat je er ook wel iets kan proeven.

Tot slot ligt even buiten het dorp de Abdij van St-Hilaire. Wij zijn er niet geweest, maar gezien de website heb ik daar een beetje spijt van. Maar die ontdekte ik pas nadat we in Ménerbes waren geweest.

Waar we ook zijn geweest, en wat zeker de moeite waard is, is een oud kapelletje. Deze ligt aan de noordkant, net buiten het dorpje. Bij de poort staat de kapel al aangegeven die je na een korte maar mooie wandeling bereikt. De kapel is niet helemaal meer in nieuwstaat, maar dat vind ik juist wel mooi. Hopelijk houden ze dat zo.

Na de wandeling naar het kappeltje besloten we een kop koffie te drinken bij het tentje bij de ingang van het dorp. Het grote terras zag er uitnodigend uit. De bediening was dat niet, ik kan mij niet precies herinneren wat er aan de hand was, maar echt gezellige lui waren het niet.

Goed eten kan je wel in Ménerbes. In de rue du Cheval Blanc zit Auberge de la Bartavelle, waar je prima kan lunchen en dineren.
