De huizen van Venasque zijn gebouwd op een steile rots die hoog boven het dal van de Nesque uitsteekt. In het dorp heb je hierdoor een fantastisch uitzicht over de rijke vlakte van de Vaucluse tot aan de Mont Ventoux.

De ‘reus van de Provence‘ is trouwens vernoemd naar het dorp Venasque en niet omdat het boven altijd waait, zoals wij hadden verzonnen.

Het dorp Venasque heeft een lange geschiedenis die teruggaat naar de Romeinen. Dankzij de hoge strategische ligging aan een oude Romeinse weg was het dorp belangrijk. Na de val van het Romeinse Rijk in het westen bleef Venasque invloedrijk in de omgeving want de Romeinse infrastructuur bleef nog eeuwen in gebruik en dankzij de strategische ligging controleerde het dorp de zuidkant van de vlakte van de Vaucluse.

Het plateau van de Vaucluse is een kalkplateau waar verschillende rivieren lopen. Deze riviertjes zetten slib af dat zorgt voor uiterst vruchtbaar land. Hierdoor is de Vaucluse al eeuwen een belangrijk gebied waar steden als Avignon, Orange en Carpentras konden ontstaan.

Merovingische doopkapel

Ook cultureel was Venasque een belangrijke plaats in de middeleeuwen. De Merovingers, de voorlopers van de Karolingers, bouwden er een doopkapel die er nu nog staat. Hoewel het bouwwerk in de elfde eeuw flink is verbouwd, geldt de kapel als één van de oudste christelijke gebouwen van Frankrijk. Verplichte kost bij een bezoek aan dit Franse dorp!

In de twaalfde en dertiende eeuw behoorde het dorp toe aan de graaf van Toulouse. In die tijd kreeg het dorp nog meer status aangezien er een bisschop zetelde. Helaas voor de graaf moest hij de streek na de kruistocht tegen de Albigenzen die hij verloor afstaan aan de Franse koning. Aan het einde van deze eeuw veranderde het gebied weer van eigenaar. Dit keer was het Paus Gregorius X die er de baas werd. Hij kreeg het uit handen van Philips de Stoute, op zijn minst een aardig cadeau zou je zeggen. Het pauselijke bezit in het zuiden van Frankrijk zou een paar decennia later de basis vormen van het besluit om in Avignon te gaan wonen.

De streek kwam nooit meer in handen van de Franse koning. Pas in 1791 behoorde het weer bij Frankrijk, maar toen was de koning inmiddels van het politieke toneel verdwenen. Twee jaar later verloor hij zelfs zijn hoofd. In de pauselijke tijd ontwikkelde de Vaucluse zich economisch en werd er een centraal bestuursapparaat gevormd.

Wandelen in het dorp

Het dorp nodigt uit om lekker een uurtje rond te wandelen. Het heeft mooie herenhuizen, straatjes en prachtige pleintjes met fonteinen. In het kerkje vind je een uniek altaarstuk. Een kunstig houtsnijwerk dat waarschijnlijk in Avignon is gemaakt.

Eten kan je ook prima in één van de twee restaurants. In Les Remparts heb je vanaf de eetzaal een fijn uitzicht over de vlakte. Bij de fontein vind je de Auberge La Fontaine. Dit restaurant heeft zowaar een video op Youtube

In de omgeving van Venasque

Het zuiden van de Vaucluse barst van de leuke dorpjes en stadjes. Vlakbij Venasque liggen Gordes, Roussillon en Ménerbes, stuk voor stuk `Beaux Villages´. Maar er zijn tal van schilderachtige dorpen in deze streek. Steden als Carpentras, Avignon en Marzin zijn ook meer dan het bezoeken waard.

Wie meer van natuur houdt, kan natuurlijk niet om de Mont Ventoux heen. Maar ook de Gorges de la Nesque is zeer bijzonder.
