Moustiers Sainte-Marie ligt vlak bij het Lac de Sainte Croix in de Provence. Deze regio is zeer populair bij Nederlanders en dat is niet vreemd want het gebied heeft veel te bieden. Moustiers ligt tegen een berg vlak voor een grote kloof waar aan een ketting een ijzeren ster boven hangt. Het dorp krijgt van ons vier sterren.

Het dorp is bekend om zijn aardewerk, de zogenaamde Faience. En hoewel de hoogtijdagen van deze industrie al lang voorbij zijn, bevindt zich in Moustiers ook nog een heus keramiekmuseum en maar liefst twintig ateliers. In de straatjes vind je dan ook tal van winkeltjes die dit aardewerk aanbieden. Heel mooi allemaal en wie een mooie en leuke schaal voor op de eettafel zoekt zou hier eens moeten kijken.

Naast winkeltjes met aardewerk biedt Moustiers ook voldoende voor de inwendige mens. Er zijn een aantal uitstekende slagers waar je heerlijke streekgerechten kan aanschaffen. Daarnaast zijn er tal van restaurants waarvan Le Belédère een prima kaart heeft en een prachtig uitzicht vanaf het terras.

Kapel in de kloof

De meest opvallende aan Moustiers Saint-Marie is ongetwijfeld de kloof die zich uitstrekt boven het dorp. Midden in deze kloof staat een oude kapel die is gebouwd in de Karolingische tijd. Dat is zo rond 800 na Christus en daar heb ik je er niet veel van in Europa.

De weg naar de kapel is het laatste deel van de bedevaartroute en kent twaalf etappes. De klim lijkt vanaf het dorp niet echt een uitdaging maar is dat voor de minder geoefende wandelaar toch wel, zeker als het warm is.

Toch is de wandeling meer dan de moeite waard want voor deze inspanning wordt je rijkelijk beloond. Na vijf minuten klimmen verlaat je de drukte van het toeristencentrum en heb je al het gevoel dat je alleen bent. Dat is natuurlijk niet zo, want er lopen nog steeds veel toeristen, maar toch is het aangenaam. Daarbij wordt je getrakteerd op een steeds mooier panorama op het dorp en dat is prachtig. Vanaf hier is ook goed te zien wat het toerisme met zo’n dorp doet: de parkeerplaatsen zijn groter dan het dorp zelf!

De ster van Moustiers

Boven ligt het kerkje aan een klein pleintje met lommerrijke bomen. Zeker even naar binnen! De kapel is klein en donker, zoals je van een kerkje uit de negende eeuw verwacht. Als je in de buurt overnacht, kan je hier ‘s avonds een concert bijwonen en dat is een unieke belevenis. Vanaf het pleintje van de kerk kan je goed de ster die boven de kloof hangt zien. Deze is volgens de legende opgehangen door een kruisvaarder die in gevangenschap tijdens zijn tocht naar het Heilige land beloofde deze op te hangen als hij zijn dorp weer terug zou zien. Een mooi verhaal en je bent geneigd het zomaar te geloven. Je vraag je wel af hoe hij dat gedaan heeft, die ster hangt best hoog!

Moustiers Sainte Marie laat zich makkelijk vinden en wordt al lang van tevoren op de wegen aangegeven. Als je komt aanrijden vanuit het zuiden via de D957, wat aan te raden is, passeer je het Lac de Sainte Croix waarbij je over de brug over de Verdon rijdt met een prachtig uitzicht over het meer en de kloof waardoor de rivier stroomt.

In de omgeving

Moustiers Saint-Marie ligt in een unieke omgeving van bergen, lavendel en water. Dankzij de aanwezigheid van het meer van Sainte Croix is het een geliefde plek om vakantie te vieren. In het meer komt de rivier de Verdon uit en dat doet hij op spectaculaire wijze. En wat je hier ziet is nog maar het begin. De rivier slingert zich door een 25 kilometer lange kloof die tot de meest spectaculaire van Europa hoort. Met de auto kan je langs de kloof rijden.

Heb je de tijd en de conditie dan is de route de Martel een must. Dit veertien kilometer lange wandelpad loopt van Chalet de la Maline naar de Samson parking en voert langs de rivier. Wij hebben het niet gedaan, want het is een stevige wandeling en het was eenvoudigweg te warm voor deze tocht. Als we weer in de buurt zijn gaan we dit zeker doen.
