Carennac ligt als een plaatje hoog boven de rechteroever van de Dordogne aan de rand van de Haut-Quercy. Bij het bezoeken van dit dorp begrijp je direct waarom deze streek zo geliefd is bij toeristen. Carennac heeft alles om het plaatje compleet te maken: een kasteel, een kerk, een klooster, schilderachtige straatjes en een prachtig uitzicht op de Dordogne.

Wij bezochten Carennac begin mei in een aarzelend zonnetje. Het toeristenseizoen was nog duidelijk in de opstartfase. De obers bewaakten met een dromerige blik de terrassen waar enkele dagjesmensen twijfelend aanschoven.

Het dorp was dus nog heerlijk rustig, waardoor we het goed konden bekijken en ervan genieten. Ik kan het iedereen aanraden om rond deze tijd de Dordogne te bezoeken.

Klooster

Carennac is ontstaan in de elfde eeuw rondom een priorij van de orde van Cluny, die nog steeds, tegen een klein bedrag, te bezoeken is. Helaas is het niet helemaal ongeschonden uit de geschiedenis gekomen. Tijdens de honderdjarige oorlog was deze streek lang het strijdtoneel en ook Carennac is in deze tijd niet aan het geweld ontsnapt. Het klooster werd voor een groot deel verwoest en na deze strijd in de vijftiende eeuw herbouwd en uitgebreid.

Vier eeuwen later moest het klooster het ook tijdens de Franse Revolutie ontgelden en raakte zwaar beschadigd. Toch maakt met name het kloosterhof het dorp de moeite waard om te bezoeken. In de kapittelzaal is nog een mooie grafligging van Jezus te zien waar de emotie van de hoofdrolspelers vanaf spat. Zeker even gaan kijken daar dus.

Kerk Saint Pierre

Naast het klooster herbergt Carennac het mooie Romaanse kerkje Saint Pierre uit de elfde eeuw. Kijk voordat je naar binnen gaat even omhoog, want boven de deur bevindt zich een prachtig timpaan uit de twaalfde eeuw. Het stelt een twaalfde-eeuwse kijk op de eindtijd voor, waarbij Jezus met de bijbel in zijn hand als koning wordt afgebeeld.

De huizen in Carennac zijn opgetrokken uit amberkleurig natuursteen en dat geeft het dorp een aangename sfeer. Ook het Château des Doyens is gebouwd met deze steen. Hier vind je een museum over de omgeving. Door gebrek aan tijd hebben wij het niet bezocht maar zo’n plaatselijk museum is in Frankrijk altijd aardig.

Een andere attractie die wij hebben gemist, zijn de kano’s. Aan het oostkant van het dorp ligt een startpunt en in de zomer is dit een uitstekend vermaak.

In de omgeving van Carennac

In de buurt van Carennac is genoeg te zien en te doen. Op nog geen tien kilometer van het dorp ligt de Gouffre du Padirac. Dat is één van de mooiste grotten van Frankrijk, waar je met een bootje op een ondergrondse rivier kan varen. Iets verder ligt het bekende bedevaartsoord Rocamadour prachtig aan de rivier de Lot.

Mooie dorpen zijn er rondom Carennac genoeg te vinden. Dit land is echt een walhalla voor liefhebbers. Op een steenworp afstand liggen Autoire, Turenne en Loubressac. Iets verder naar het noorden rijden is Colloges-le-Rouge en in het westen liggen Domme en La Rogue-Gageac. Genoeg te zien dus!
