Saint-Robert ligt in het prachtige landschap op de grens van de Perigord, Limousin en de Quercy. Het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de grote abdijkerk waar omheen is gebouwd. Sinds 1972 wordt er in de kerk elke zomer een festival voor klassieke muziek gehouden dat inmiddels een zeer goede reputatie heeft opgebouwd. Het moet een unieke ervaring zijn om in de kerk uit de twaalfde eeuw een concert bij te wonen.

Saint-Robert heeft minder dan vierhonderd inwoners maar heeft een lange geschiedenis. In de twaalfde eeuw werd hier een klooster gesticht waarvan de kerk nog overeind staat. De architectuur van de kerk verraadt dat het hier in die tijd niet helemaal veilig was want het gebedsgebouw heeft meer weg van een kasteel.

De zomer is slechts een vage gedachte als ik op een regenachtige dag in januari besluit een bezoek aan deze “plus beaux village de France” te brengen. Beter gezegd is het mijn zoon die graag zijn nieuwe camera wil uitproberen en aandringt op dit uitje. Vanuit het bassin de Brive klimt de weg omhoog om het hooggelegen stadje te bereiken. Boven aangekomen bied de keuze om de weg te vervolgen richting de Dordogne, of een haakse bocht te nemen richting het oude gedeelte en te parkeren bij de van oorsprong benedictijnse kerk.

Kerk

Het aanzicht van de kerk vanaf het parkeerterrein is klassiek genoeg, een toren met twee zijbeuken, maar eenmaal binnen blijkt het schip rond van vorm en omgeven door pilaren te zijn, een detail dat het interieur speelser maakt dan de strenge façade. Er is een fraai houtgesneden Christusfiguur uit de dertiende eeuw te bewonderen, maar de voornaamste reden om St. Robert te bezoeken ligt buiten.

Aan de zuidkant van de kerk bevind zich een getrapte tuin die eindigt boven de stadswal en vrij uitzicht heeft op de vallei richting Brive en op een markante tegenoverliggende heuvel het stadje Ayen. Vanaf deze kant bied de kerk een totaal ander en mooier aanzicht. Kijkend richting het oosten zien we delen van de stadswal met op de hoek het indrukwekkende dak van het Chateau d’Aragon

Stadspaleisjes

Wandelend richting het oosten dalen we een steegje af met aan beide zijden huizen opgetrokken in de kenmerkende gele zandsteen, en al snel worden de huizen groter en voornamer met links en rechts stadspaleisjes waaronder dat van de schrijver van “jules et Jim”, dat later verfilmd is door Truffaut. Net buiten de stadspoort aan de rechterkant het chateau d’Aragon, een idyllisch  kasteeltje uit de veertiende eeuw.

Op het plein bij de kerk vind u nog een bakker, een kruideniertje en een restaurant, en het begin van een wandeling van 7 km, die ook per fiets is te doen, mits voldoende getraind. De omgeving is betoverend mooi. Uitgebreide bossen worden afgewisseld met een open heuvel-landschap waar het overal aanwezige water een hoofdrol opeist. Op de riviertjes kan je bovendien uitstekend kanoën.

Het vlakbij gelegen Ayen en vooral Ayen-bas zijn ook een bezoekje waard, met in Ayen-bas een chateau en een abdij uit de twaalfde eeuw. Nemen we de eerder genoemde weg richting de Dordogne dan zijn we al snel bij chateau Hautefort, een oorspronkelijk middeleeuwse burcht die in de zeventiende eeuw is verbouwd tot pronk kasteel met indrukwekkende tuinen. Het kasteel heeft tevens een befaamde collectie meubels uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw.
