Het dorp Autoire ligt in het westen in Frankrijk in de buurt van de rivieren de Lot en de Dordogne. Het heeft alles wat je van een Frans dorp mag verwachten; mooie huizen, een kerkje, een restaurantje en een monument voor de gesneuvelde soldaten uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Maar Autoire heeft nog iets meer want het ligt prachtig tussen de rotsen en heeft als bonus een prachtige waterval. Het is even lopen vanuit het dorp, maar het is de moeite waard!

Wij zijn twee keer in Autoire geweest, beide keren in de eerste week van mei. De eerste keer regende het behoorlijk, was het rond het vriespunt en hebben wij het dorp niet goed bekeken.

Het enige restaurant in het dorp dat open was, bleek iets te chique voor drie kleine kinderen. Het was gewoon te koud voor een wandeling en we zijn maar een grot gaan bezoeken. De tweede keer was het prachtig weer en hebben we heerlijk gewandeld in het dorp en de omgeving. Autoire is goed voor vier sterren.

Autoire ligt vlak bij de Lot, een zeer geliefde streek bij Nederlandse en Britse vakantiegangers. Ondanks dat het dorp een ‘Plus Beaux Village’ is, is het er niet druk. In mei tenminste, het kan anders zijn in de zomer, maar ik heb het idee dat het niet heel erg toeristisch is.

Dat is natuurlijk prima, want zo kan je beter van het dorp genieten. Hierdoor heb je het idee dat jij het dorpje zelf hebt gevonden, zodat je het in je gedachten kunt claimen. Dat is natuurlijk onzin, maar wel een leuk gevoel.

De geschiedenis van Autoire gaat terug naar de elfde eeuw. Tijdens de Honderdjarige Oorlog was de streek het toneel van veel gevechten en ook dit dorp ontkwam hier uiteindelijk niet aan. Het werd verwoest door de Engelsen. Ook tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen in de zestiende eeuw werd Autoire niet gespaard.

Naast het kerkje vind je een fijn restaurant met een goed terras en een prachtig uitzicht. Een prima plek om je na een stevige wandeling aan de rosé te laven. Je kan hier ook Malakoff bestellen; een zoete lekkernij die genoemd is naar de slag. Het verhaal gaat dat de kok van de generaal dit gerecht voor het eerst tijdens de Krimoorlog heeft gemaakt.

Eén van de attracties die Autoire het bezoeken waard maakt, is de hoge waterval. Deze bevindt zich niet in het dorp maar net ten zuiden daarvan. Er zijn twee manieren om deze waterval te bezoeken, beide zijn niet aan te raden voor mensen die slecht ter been zijn of met kleine kinderen (jonger dan 4 jaar).

Als je niet al te veel tijd hebt, kan je het beste het pad boven de waterval volgen. Daarvoor rij je met de auto het dorp uit in zuidelijke richting. Na een kilometer kom je dan in een kloof en is er aan de linkerkant een parkeerplaats. Deze is een beetje verstopt achter een hoge rots, dus rij niet te hard anders mis je hem en moet je keren. Het wandelpad begint aan de overkant van de weg. Het tweede gedeelte van het pad is behoorlijk stijl en leidt naar een plateau met een schitterend uitzicht over het dorp en het keteldal. Het is even klimmen, maar het uitzicht is de moeite waard.

Hieronder een video, van Nederlanders, die ik gevonden heb over de wandeling naar de waterval.Als je meer tijd hebt, dan is het wandelpad vanuit het dorp ook de moeite waard. Ook hier geldt dat het laatste stuk behoorlijk klauteren is en dus niet geschikt voor mensen die slecht ter been zijn of met zeer jonge kinderen. Hou er ook rekening mee dat je door het vallende water behoorlijk nat kan worden, wat bij mooi weer natuurlijk niet erg is. Neem vanaf de zuidelijke parkeerplaats de weg langs het kasteeltje waarna je het bos in wandelt. Je loopt nu naast een beekje en die volg je totdat je de waterval tegenkomt. Een mooie tocht en na afloop kan je met een gerust hart op het terras een versnapering nuttigen.

De omgeving

In de omgeving van Autoire is genoeg te zien en te beleven. Het bedevaartsoord Rocamadour is een absolute aanrader, al kan het in de vakantie behoorlijk druk zijn. Ook Saint Cirque-Lapopie is niet heel ver weg. Liefhebbers van grotten kunnen in deze streek ook hun hart ophalen. De meest indrukwekkend is ongetwijfeld de Gouffre de Padirac.
