Lauzerte is vrij groot voor een dorpje. Als je door de straten en over de pleinen loopt, voelt deze plaats ook niet als een dorp. Dat wil niet zeggen dat Lauzerte geen bezoek waard is, maar als ‘Plus Beaux Village de France’ voelt het toch redelijk groot.

De heuvel waarop Lauzerte is gebouwd, wordt al heel lang bewoond. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat Lauzerte al 1.000 v. Chr. bewoond was maar zeker is dat de Kelten, ook bekend als Galliërs, er een oppidum bouwden. Dat is een soort van burcht met versterkte aarden wallen. Deze moet hebben gelegen waar nu het centrale plein is.

In de twaalfde eeuw bouwde de graaf van Toulouse in Lauzerte een kasteel. Deze burcht gaf de bevolking bescherming en dat gaf de plaats handel en welvaart. Dat werd nog eens versterkt doordat Lauzerte op de pelgrimsroute lag naar Santiago de Compostella. Dat was aan het einde van de middeleeuwen de meest populaire pelgrimstocht.

Centrale plein

De rijkdom van toen is nog goed te zien aan de huizen die aan het centrale plein liggen. Het plein is uitgevoerd met een gallerij van bogen zoals je veel ziet in deze streek. Bij ons bezoek in juli was er op het plein een podium voor het jaarlijkse feest. Hoewel ik dol ben op dit soort feesten was het wel jammer.

Op het plein vind je wat terrasjes en leuke winkeltjes waar allerlei kunstzinnige zaken worden aangeboden want, net zoals bij veel dorpjes in deze omgeving, er zijn veel kunstenaars in het dorp. Je moet zelf maar kijken of er iets tussen zit. Vreemd was wel dat in één van deze winkeltjes mijn vraag, ik weet niet meer waarover, in het Nederlands werd beantwoord. Dat heeft altijd iets jammerlijks, ze zouden Nederlanders die in Frankrijk wonen moeten verbieden Nederlands te spreken tegen toeristen!

Rondom het plein barst het van de gezellige straatjes waar je heerlijk kan verdwalen. Loop je naar het zuiden dan kom je uiteindelijk op een groot terras waar je een schitterend uitzicht hebt over de landerijen rondom het dorpje. Vlak onder dit terras vind je de Jardin de Pèlerin, een tuin die in het teken staat van de pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de Compostella.

De tuin staat vol met bordjes met liedjes die tijdens deze tocht werden gezongen en natuurlijk allerlei bijzondere planten. Het is echt de moeite waard om daar even te kijken, zeker op een warme dag is de schaduwrijke tuin een prima plek om een stokbroodje met een stukje kaas te nuttigen.

Eten

Over eten gesproken, Lauzerte ligt in de streek van de foie gras, iets wat zeer lekker is maar dat je eigenlijk niet mag eten. Daarnaast kent de streek zijn eigen wijn AOC maar ook een AOC voor meloenen. Tijdens de tocht naar het plaatsje kom je langs uitgebreide boomgaarden met allerlei soorten vruchten. Even stoppen dus om perziken, abrikozen of een meloen voor de lunch aan te schaffen.

In de omgeving

Omdat Lauzerte net niet in het toeristische gebied van de Lot en de Dordogne ligt, sta je hier niet in de file met Nederlandse auto’s. Toch kan het hier in de zomer wel druk zijn. De Lot en de Dordogne bieden genoeg vertier om hier lekker een weekje vakantie te vieren.

Festiviteiten in Lauzerte
Zoals een goed Frans dorp betaamt, heeft Lauzerte in de zomer voldoende feesten en evenementen. In april is er een bloemenfeest. In de zomermaanden (juni, juli, augustus en september) zijn er talloze exposities waar het eerder genoemde plaatselijke kunstenaarsgilde zijn waar aanprijst. Natuurlijk ontbreekt ook een antiekmarkt niet op de agenda.
