In Frankrijk heb je prachtige dorpjes en je hebt hele kleine prachtige dorpjes. Arlempdes behoort tot die laatste categorie. Dit dorp in de Auvergne ligt hoog boven de Loire in een gebied waar je je best moet doen om een buitenlandse toerist tegen te komen. Ondanks dat het dorp zo klein is heeft het toch een kasteel, of althans de resten daarvan, en die beheerst het aanzien van het dorp.

Het dorp is gebouwd in een bocht van de kloof van de Loire. Denk hierbij niet aan de brede rivier vol met kiezels zoals in de buurt bij Blois want de Loire is hier meer een uit de kluiten gewassen bergbeek met kristal helder water. Het dorp staat halverwege een vulkanische piek waar de rivier omheen stroomt.

In het dorp stelt niet heel veel voor. Er zijn een aantal gîtes, er is een restaurant en een kerk. Bij ons bezoek was er naast een paar Amerikaanse toeristen helemaal niemand en het dorp leek uitgestorven. Ook bij het kasteel was er niemand maar de poorten waren wel gesloten. Een verschoten bord leerden ons dat je toegangskaarten kon kopen bij het restaurant maar daar was ook niemand te vinden. Helaas zat er een bezoek aan het kasteel niet in die dag.

Ook de kerk was niet open. De buitenkant heeft een robuuste uitstraling met een platte gevel die je wel meer ziet in dit deel van de Auvergne. Bovenaan hangen drie klokken in de open lucht, er is plek voor een vierde klok maar die hangt er niet meer. De voorgevel bestaat uit drie lagen waarbij het opvalt dat de bovenste laag met de klokken slechts een twee derde van de gevel omvat. In het onderste deel bevindt zich de deur met een sober Romaans portaal. Ik hou daar wel van en vind het best mooi.

Het pleintje voor de kerk ziet er goed uit en wordt aan één kant afgesloten door het poortgebouw die toegang biedt tot het dorp. Hoe klein ook, Arlempdes heeft wel een museum, een eco museum volgens de richting aanwijzing. Helaas was die ook dicht. Kennelijk op ook vakantie of een zeer lange lunchpauze.

Het uitgestorven dorp is in de laatste weken van juli echter druk want dan wordt in het kasteel een cultureel festival georganiseerd. Dit moet een leuke bedoeling zijn want op deze geweldige plek wordt onder de sterren theater en muziek gemaakt. Het lijkt mij helemaal goed. Als je in de buurt bent is dat dus zeker de moeite waard om even te gaan kijken.

Buiten het festival lijkt zich het leven hier langzaam voor te kabbelen. Na een half uurtje rond te hebben gelopen waren wij wel klaar en keerden weer terug naar de auto. Een paar honderd meter stroomopwaarts kwamen we er achter waarom het dorp zo uitgestorven was want we troffen flink wat mensen aan de oever van de rivier die daar verkoeling in het water vonden.

Dat leek ons ook een uitstekend idee en met een prachtig uitzicht op het dorp hebben wij ons een middag vermaakt langs het snelstromende water. Lekker met de voetjes erin en visjes kijken.  Gelukkig hadden we nog wat in de picknicktas, neem die altijd mee als je een ritje gaat maken, en trokken we een flesje open, het stockbrood en de camembert maakten het feest compleet.
