Het dorp Beuvron-en-Auge ligt vlakbij Caen en heeft één van de mooiste dorpspleinen in Normandië. Er staan meer dan veertig vakwerkhuizen en op het plein staat een prachtig houten markthal. Helaas is deze laatste niet heel oud, hij stamt uit de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw. Dat maakt voor het plaatje echter niet veel uit, het blijft een uiterst fraai plein.

Het schiereiland van Cotentin in Normandië heeft verrassend veel variatie in landschappen met elk hun eigen sfeer. Beroemd zijn de grote zandstranden waar de Amerikanen en Britten in 1944 landden, rij een paar kilometer verder en de kust is veranderd in hoge kliffen. Op een zonnige maar winderige dag in mei maakten wij een autotocht langs de kust ten zuiden van Cherbourg richting Cap La Hague. We ontdekten hier één van de mooiste en dramatische kusten van Frankrijk.

Iets ten zuiden van Rouen ligt Le Bec-Hellouin dat is gebouwd naast een Benedictijns klooster. De abdij werd in de elfde eeuw gesticht door ene Hellouin, die zowel ridder als monnik was. Een combinatie die op ons nu raar overkomt, maar in die tijd kwam dit wel meer voor. Het klooster staat er nog, of beter gezegd weer. Het werd in de veertiende eeuw, tijdens de Honderdjarige oorlog tussen Engeland en Frankrijk, verwoest en later weer opgebouwd.

De Mont Saint-Michiel is samen met de Eiffeltoren de bekendste ‘landmark’ van Frankrijk. En dat is terecht want het kleine eiland voor de kust tussen Normandië en Bretagne is betoverend mooi en is in veel opzichten uniek. De abdij boven op de enige berg van het eiland kent een lange geschiedenis en een enorme hoeveelheid zalen, vertrekken en gangen. Je bent er echter nooit alleen, want hier komen na Parijs de meeste toeristen van Frankrijk.

Nu is Barfleur een klein dorpje, maar de in verhouding grote haven verraadt dat het dorp in het verleden belangrijk was. In de Middeleeuwen was Barfleur één van de belangrijkste havens aan het kanaal en kende het een bloeiperiode. Zo werd bijvoorbeeld het schip waarmee 1066 Willem de Veroveraar naar Engeland voer om daar de boel te veroveren werd hier gebouwd. Later werd er nog een zeeslag uitgevochten tussen Frankrijk tegen een Engelse en Nederlandse coalitie, die werd gewonnen door de Fransen.

Als ik aan Normandië denk dan krijg ik direct de beelden van de ‘Longest Day’ op mijn netvlies. De beelden uit de film van de moeilijke eerste uren van de Amerikanen op de stranden tussen Cherbourg en Cean hebben op mij een geweldige indruk gemaakt. Natuurlijk heeft dit deel van Frankrijk veel meer te bieden, maar bij een bezoek ontkom je niet aan dit stukje recente geschiedenis. En laten we wel wezen, het is interessant en als je er gevoelig voor bent, zorgt het voor meer dan genoeg historische sensatie.

Sainte Mere Eglise ligt midden op het schiereiland Cotentin in Normandië en was het eerste dorp in West-Europa dat in WO II werd bevrijd.  De gebeurtenissen op 6 juni 1944 toen Amerikaanse luchtlandingstroepen boven het dorp uit hun vliegtuigen sprongen maakt het dorp het beroemdste Franse dorp in Amerika. In Sainte Mere Eglise zijn ze deze helden niet vergeten, integendeel. Naast een interessant museum staat het dorp en de hele omgeving vol met monumenten zodat de bezoeker de geschiedenis van het dorp tijdens D-Day niet kan ontgaan.

De Dordogne is een zeer populaire streek in Frankrijk om vakantie te vieren, vooral Nederlanders weten deze streek te waarderen. Het gebied is vernoemd naar de mooie brede rivier die er doorheen stroomt waaraan prachtige steden en dorpjes liggen. De meest bekende is ongetwijfeld Sarlat-la-Canéda met zijn mooie straatjes en gezellige pleintjes met terrassen. Sarlat is dan ook een prima uitvalbasis om de Dordogne te verkennen.

Voor veel Nederlanders die de toeristische drukte van de Dordogne willen ontvluchten is de streek langs De Lot een uitstekend alternatief. De rivier ligt maar drie afslagen verder en is iets rustiger. Deze mooie omgeving heeft ook veel te beiden. Naast de prachtige stad Cahors en het bedevaartsoord Rocamadour vind je in de streek de mooiste grotten van Frankrijk.

In het uiterste zuiden van Frankrijk ligt het departement Pyrénées-Orientales. De bekendste stad van deze streek is ongetwijfeld de hoofdstad Perpignan. Het gebied wordt gedomineerd door de hoge toppen van de Pyreneeën en de kust van Middellandse Zee. Naast Perpignan zijn Céret en Prades de belangrijkste steden in de streek.
