In het uiterste zuiden van Frankrijk ligt het departement Pyrénées-Orientales. De bekendste stad van deze streek is ongetwijfeld de hoofdstad Perpignan. Het gebied wordt gedomineerd door de hoge toppen van de Pyreneeën en de kust van Middellandse Zee. Naast Perpignan zijn Céret en Prades de belangrijkste steden in de streek.

De Elzas is een bijzondere streek met een zeer eigen cultuur en een lekkere eigenwijze keuken. Eigenlijk vormt de Elzas de grens tussen Frankrijk en Duitsland en dat is aan alles te merken als je daar bent. Zo klinken de namen daar heel Duits, denk maar aan Mulhouse, Kaysersberg en Straatsburg, maar moet je deze wel met een Franse tong uitspreken.

Bourgondië is de streek in Frankrijk waarbij je als Nederlander het beste gevoel krijgt als je het uitspreekt. Het eten, het landschap en de manier van leven spreekt iedereen aan. En dat is ook terecht omdat Bourgondië alles heeft waar wij als Nederlanders denken waar je gelukkig van wordt; een prachtig landschap met bergen en wijngaarden, lekker eten, mooie steden zoals Autun en Dijon maar natuurlijk ook prachtige dorpen.

De Auvergne is ruw, wild, ongerept en indrukwekkend. Hier vind je ook waanzinnig mooie dorpen en kleine steden waarin je aan alles merkt dat Parijs ver weg is. De Auvergne beslaat een groot gebied in het hart van Frankrijk waarvan het landschap wordt gekenmerkt door het Centraal Massief. Dit gebergte is veel ouder dan de Alpen en de Pyreneeën en hoewel niet zo hoog is het zeker zo ruig en ongerept.

De Vaucluse is een prachtige streek in de het zuiden van Frankrijk. Met sfeervolle steden als Avignon, Orange en Carpentras. Daarnaast barst de Vaucluse van prachtig mooie dorpjes waar een heerlijke sfeer hangt. Deze dorpen zijn niet zelden fantastisch gesitueerd in het bergachtige landschap. De Vaucluse is nooit saai want er is veel te doen voor zowel de sportievelingen als cultuurliefhebbers. Denk maar eens aan de beklimming van de Mont Ventoux en het jaarlijkse festival in Avignon waar de beste kunstenaars optreden in de straten en pleinen van deze stad waar ooit de paus zetelde.  Het klimaat zorgt ervoor dat elke vakantie in deze streek een feest wordt.

Frankrijk is een prachtig land waar je je uitstekend kan vermaken. Het land is echter niet heel goedkoop. Boodschappen zijn bijvoorbeeld iets duurder dan in Nederland maar daar staat tegenover dat benzine en restaurants weer iets goedkoper zijn. Musea, kastelen, dierentuinen, attractieparken en andere bezienswaardigheden zijn over het algemeen niet duur vergeleken met Nederland, maar voor veel moet je toch wel iets betalen.

In het zuiden van Normandië, aan de oevers van de rivier de Sarthe, ligt Saint Céneri le Gérei. Het dorp is ontstaan op de plek waar een oude Italiaanse kluizenaar zich in de zevende eeuw vestigde. En in die tijd werd je dan al snel heilig: Saint Céneri dus. Er werd vlot een klooster gebouwd dat helaas al in de middeleeuwen werd verwoest, door Vikingen in de tiende eeuw.

Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden ligt Lyons-la-Forêst midden in een bos. Het dorp is bekend om zijn fraaie zeventiende-eeuwse huizen, waarvan er nog er veel in een uitstekende staat zijn. De geschiedenis van het dorp is echter ouder. In de dertiende eeuw was het zelfs een zeer belangrijke plaats, omdat de Engelse koning, die ook hertog van Normandië was, hier vaak verbleef.

Het aanzicht en de geschiedenis van Chateauneuf wordt beheerst door het kasteel dat is gebouwd in de twaalfde eeuw. Het oude vestingstadje staat strategisch op een heuvel zodat  het dat de oude weg tussen Dijon en Autun beheerst. Daarbij is in de negentiende eeuw de Canal de Bourgogne bij gekomen en met de wijngaarden van de Côte d’Or om de hoek is Chateauneuf en Auxois het perfecte dorp is voor een ansichtkaart.

Frankrijk is natuurlijk een fantastisch land om vakantie te vieren. De cultuur, de geschiedenis, het klimaat, de landschappen en natuurlijk het eten zorgen ervoor dat wij het er altijd goed naar onze zin hebben. Maar één van de leukste dingen in Frankrijk zijn volgens mij de enorme supermarkten. Sommige zijn groter dan de binnenstad van een flinke Nederlandse stad en ze verkopen er zo’n beetje alles. Ze zijn open tot ’s avonds laat en op zondag meestal tot een uur of twaalf in de middag.
