De Mont Ventoux is misschien wel de bekendste berg van Frankrijk, alleen de Mont Blanc kan met hem wedijveren. De reus van de Provence is met name bekend om met een fiets te beklimmen maar ook met de auto is de tocht naar de top een unieke ervaring.

In de bossen van Bourgondië staat één van de belangrijkste gebouwen die nog over zijn uit de middeleeuwen; de abdij van Fontenay. Dit klooster is één van de weinige nog bestaande gebouwen van een netwerk waar eeuwen lang kennis werd bewaard uit onder andere de klassieke oudheid. Dat maakt het bijzonder maar Fontenay is ook hét voorbeeld van de Romaanse kloosterbouw. Vanuit een kunsthistorisch perspectief is het om je vingers bij af te likken, maar deze negen eeuwen oude gebouwen hebben bovenal een unieke mystieke en betoverende sfeer. En dat is het bezoek meer dan waard, ook als je iets minder van kunstgeschiedenis geïnteresseerd bent.

Conflans ligt in het dal van Albertville in de Savoie midden in de Franse Alpen. Het dorp ligt op de plek waar de Arly in de rivier Isère uitmondt en daar heeft het dorp dan ook zijn naam aan te danken. Dankzij de strategische ligging hoog boven het dal beheerste Conflans eeuwenlange de omgeving. In de negentiende eeuw kwam daar een einde aan door de groei van Albertville waardoor het Middeleeuwse stadje zijn invloed zag dalen. Je hebt er prachtig uitzicht op de stad waar ooit de Olympische Spelen werden gehouden.

Chamonix wordt de hoofdstad van de bergsport genoemd. Aangezien wij geen klimmers zijn, drie van de vier gezinsleden hebben hoogtevrees, dachten wij niet zo veel te zoeken te hebben in dit stadje aan de voet van de Mont Blanc. Maar dat bleek helemaal verkeerd gedacht want Chamonix is helemaal leuk en wij hebben er ons twee dagen uitstekend vermaakt zonder dat we een klimbijl hebben aangeraakt. Hoogtepunten waren het bezoek aan de Mer du Glace en de Aiguille du Midi.

Het dorp Epoisses in de Côte d’Or is bekend om zijn kaas met zo’n sterke geur produceert dat je er gemakkelijk een halve straat mee plat krijgt. Maar het is ook een leuk dorp en mocht je er in de buurt zijn is het de moeite waard om even langs te rijden. En daar hoef je geen kaasliefhebber voor te zijn, al helpt het wel.

Eén van de bekendste Franse producten is ongetwijfeld de 2CV. Deze karakteristieke auto werd ontworpen als antwoord op de Kever en moest goedkoop en praktisch zijn. Naast vier wielen en een luchtgekoelde motor verschilt de Citroën in alles met zijn Duitse tegenhanger. Hoewel het ontwerp meer dan 75 jaar oud is, rijden er nog opvallend veel rond. Wie er achter wil komen wat deze chauffeurs bezielt kan ik het boekje Ma Petite van Margré Mijer aanbevelen.

De blog ‘Van Franse bodem‘ is één van mijn favoriete websites die ik elke week wel bezoek. Op de blog vertelt Marielle den Hartog over Franse producten en omdat ik geregeld in het land te vinden ben, is dat een feest der herkenning. Nu is er ook een boekje en dat is net zo leuk. Een ideaal cadeau voor elke Frankrijk liefhebber omdat het er uitstekend uitziet en vol staat met weetjes waar je blij van wordt. Heerlijk om te lezen in Nederland, maar ook uitstekend te consumeren in Frankrijk. Al heb ik dat laatste niet getest.

Lavaudieu ligt even ten zuiden van Clermond-Ferrand en is goed bereikbaar vanaf de snelweg A75 naar Milau. Het dorp kent een lange geschiedenis en is ontstaan in de elfde eeuw toen er hier een klooster werd gesticht. De achthoekige toren van de kerk van deze abdij domineert het silhouet van het plaatsje.

Eten is in Frankrijk een belangrijk onderdeel van de cultuur en één van de reden voor ons om er vakantie te vieren. Toch kom je soms curieuze culinaire zaken tegen waar je op zijn minst je wenkbrauwen van optrekt. Zo kwamen we de afgelopen jaren een automaat tegen waar je kaas kan kopen, eentje waar je ruwe melk kan tappen en een pizza kan kopen.

Frankrijk heeft van alle landen in West-Europa waarschijnlijk de meest verschillende landschappen en wij hebben er al veel gezien. Nu krijg ik weleens de vraag wat ik het mooiste gebied vind en daar heb ik eigenlijk geen goed antwoord op. Daarom heb ik een lijst gemaakt van landschappen die volgens mij de moeite waard zijn om eens te gaan bezoeken. Dit zijn volgens mij de streken met het mooiste natuurschoon. Daarbij heb ik wel een voorliefde van bergen en het moet gezegd worden dat ik (nog) niet in Bretagne en Corsica ben geweest. Ik heb zo het vermoeden dat deze regio’s ook op dit lijstje horen. Hierbij mijn lijst van de mooiste landschappen in willekeurige volgorde.
