Ten zuidoosten van Millau ligt één van de mooiste onontdekte geologische attracties van Frankrijk; de Cirque de Navacelles. Dit enorme keteldal ligt aan de zuidkant van het Centraal Massief vormt een onderdeel van de Gorges du Vis en staat garant voor een spectaculaire rit met fantastische vergezichten.

Rocamadour is de oudste toeristische attractie in de omgeving van de Dordogne. Als je de pelgrimstochten tenminste ziet als tourisme avant la lettre is het stadje al eeuwen een trekpleister voor reizigers en toeristen. Dankzij een unieke combinatie van geschiedenis, gezelligheid, kunst en een prachtig landschap werkt het stadje als een magneet op reizigers. Iedereen die in de buurt is mag het stadje gebouwd op een rots boven de rivier Alzou absoluut niet missen.

Eén van de mooiste attracties in de Provence is de Pont du Gard. Het bouwwerk is bijna tweeduizend jaar oud en een prachtig voorbeeld van de Romeinse bouwkunst. Het is buitengewoon goed bewaard gebleven en staat op een mooie plek waardoor techniek en landschap op een wonderbaarlijke manier elkaar aanvullen. Een bezoek aan deze burg over de Gardon is een ‘must’ en om met het groene boekje te spreken: ‘De reis waard’. De Pont staat op de lijst van de UNESCO en is dus werelderfgoed, maar dat is wel meer in Frankrijk.

Het dorp Mosset is gebouwd op een berg in het woeste landschap van de Pyreneeën ten westen van Perpignan. Het dorp is echt een plaatje en lijkt te zijn gemaakt voor een ansichtkaart. Desondanks is Mosset nog niet ontdekt door het massatoerisme waardoor je in de steile straatjes de sfeer van het dorp nog kan ontdekken.

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog besloot Frankrijk aan de oostgrens een enorme hoeveelheid forten, bunkers en andere versterkingen te bouwen om zich te verdedigen tegen een Duitse aanval. Deze verdedigingswerken zijn in de geschiedenis in gegaan als de Maginotlinie en was in die tijd het duurste defensieproject van Frankrijk. Het grootste en duurste fort van deze linie is Ouvrage Hackenberg en ligt nabij het dorp Vackering. Het mooie is dat het bijna compleet intact is en nog mooier, open voor het publiek, compleet met een rijdend ondergronds treintje.

Nederlanders en Fransen hebben niet heel veel gemeen, maar onze liefde voor kaas is toch iets wat ons verbindt. Liefhebbers van kaas, en wie is dat niet, kan zijn hart ophalen in de Bourgogne. Naast tal van lokale soorten komen er drie AOC kazen uit deze streek. En dat is geen slechte score want er zijn slechts 45 van dit soort kazen. Er zijn natuurlijk veel meer soorten kazen in Frankrijk, maar die hebben geen appelation. Bourgondië heeft er dus drie en die moet je eten als je de streek bezoekt. Hier vind je een beschrijving van de Epoisses, de Langres, de Chaource en nog handvol andere Bourgondische kazen die de moeite waard zijn om te proberen.

In juli is Frankrijk het decor voor het grootste sportevenement van de wereld, de Tour de France. Deze unieke wielerwedstrijd behoort tot de essentiële onderdelen van de Franse cultuur en identiteit. Belvès is één de ‘Plus beaux villages’ die zijn te vinden in de streek rondom de rivier Dordogne. Het dorp van is gebouwd op een kalkrots boven de riviertje Nauze en ligt niet ver van de bekende stad Sarlat. Eén van de pronkstukken van het dorp is de markthal uit de vijftiende eeuw met 23 eikenhouten palen waaronder iedere zaterdag nog altijd markt wordt gehouden. Onder het marktplein zijn holwoningen die meer dan 2.000 jaar geleden al bewoond werden.

De Ardèche is één van de populairste streken in Frankrijk waar in de zomer veel Nederlanders neerstrijken op een camping. Naast het natuurschoon heeft het gebied langs de rivier prachtige stadjes en dorpen. Eén van de mooiste is ongetwijfeld Aiguèze dat is gebouwd bovenop een hoge klif boven de rivier De Ardèche.

Hoewel we al veel van Frankrijk hebben gezien, was het gebied rondom de Ardèche voor ons lang een zwarte vlek op de kaart. We wisten wel dat het mooi was, maar de hoeveelheid toeristen in het hoogseizoen stond ons tegen en voor een weekje in het voorjaar ligt het toch ver.

Het kleine dorpje Loubressac ligt op een rots boven de vallei van de Dordogne in de regio Midi-Pyrénées. Het dorpje heeft een kasteel, een mooie kerk en is nog niet zo druk met toeristen zodat je hier nog de rustige sfeer van de Quercy kan beleven met een adembenemend uitzicht op het dal van de Dordogne.
