Vanaf de stichting in 1090 is Villefranche de Conflent een vesting geweest. Het dorp ligt ook op een strategische plek tussen de hoge rotsen en de plek waar de rivieren Têt en Cady bij elkaar komen. De militaire waarde van het stadje was eeuwenlang groot. Nog in de negentiende eeuw zijn de vestingmuren vernieuwd en vergroot. Napoleon III was de laatste die opdracht gaf om Villefranche de Conflent nog eens flink onder handen te nemen. Daarover later meer.

Als je het in Frankrijk hebt over militaire vestingen, dan praat je al snel over Vauban. Deze Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban is één van de grootste militaire helden van Frankrijk, te vergelijken met Frederik Hendrik in Nederland. Deze van oorsprong Bourgondiër vocht vanaf zijn twintigste levensjaar voor het leger van Lodewijk XIV. Een goed gekozen carrière want in de achttiende eeuw was er voor militairen in Frankrijk genoeg te doen.

De Zonnekoning hield wel van een oorlog op zijn tijd en hoewel Frankrijk bijna geen oorlog wist te winnen, was Vauban één van de generaals die wél succesvol was. Zijn specialiteit was het veroveren van vestingen en steden. Dankzij de kennis die hij bij deze activiteiten opdeed, werd hij gevraagd om vestingen en steden te versterken. Ook in Nederland heeft hij gevochten en heeft hij de verdedigingswerken van Maastricht gebouwd.

Militair bouwmeester; Vauban

Vanzelfsprekend heeft Vauban ook in Frankrijk veel gebouwd. Met een beetje verstand van vestingbouw kan je met een gerust hart bij het naderen van een onbekende vesting in Frankrijk qausi-nonchalant tegen je vrienden vertellen dat Vauban het heeft gebouwd. Negentig procent kans dat je gelijk hebt,

en hiermee zal jouw aanzien binnen het reisgezelschap tot grote hoogte stijgen. Enige vereiste is dat je een vesting uit de achttiende eeuw moet kunnen herkennen. Als je dan niet kan, is het verstandiger je mond houden. Maar met een beetje oefening heb je het zo onder de knie.

Ook Villefranche de Conflent is door deze Vauban onder handen genomen. De dominante muren die het complete stadje aan het zicht van de naderende toerist onttrekken, zijn van zijn hand. Deze muren wekken onmiddellijk de nieuwsgierigheid. Wat bevindt zich achter deze muren? Je verwacht een enorme vesting in vorm van kazematten, kazernes en andere militaire gebouwen. Maar niets van dat alles. Achter de hoge m

uren ligt een gezellig dorpje verscholen met leuke winkeltjes, boetiekjes, fijne restaurantjes en terrasjes. Als je eenmaal binnen bent, verraadt alleen het strenge stratenpatroon de militaire oorsprong van de nederzetting.

Natuurlijk is het mogelijk om de muur te beklimmen en dan wordt ook de leeftijd van het stadje duidelijker zichtbaar en met een beetje goede wil kan je de geschiedenis ervan lezen. De muur omvat namelijk twee galerijen onder elkaar. De onderste dateert uit de elfde eeuw, de tweede is gebouwd voor Vauban, achttiende eeuw dus.

Fort Liberia

Naast de hoge muren van het stadje zelf heeft Vauban aan de andere kant van de rivier de Têt een grote burcht gebouwd: Fort Liberia. De kanonnen van deze burcht gaven de Fransen de complete controle over de nauwe vallei die aan alle kanten is omgeven door hoge bergen. Om de logistiek te verbeteren, besloot Napoleon III in de negentiende eeuw tussen het stadje en de burcht een tunnel te graven, een uitdagend plan. Resultaat is een lange tunnel met bijna duizend treden. Het lag eigenlijk in de planning om de tunnel onder de rivier te laten gaan, maar dat werd financieel toch echt te gortig.

Wie over een goede conditie beschikt kan de tocht omhoog door de tunnel nog altijd maken, maar je kan je ook met een 4×4 naar de burcht laten vervoeren om vervolgens via de tunnel naar het stadje af te dalen.

Grotten

Villefranche de Conflent herbergt nog meer ondergrondse schatten. In een straal van vijfhonderd meter liggen namelijk maar liefst drie grotten. Twee daarvan zijn in het dorp toegankelijk en in één van de grotten zijn sporen van prehistorische bewoning gevonden. De vallei is dus al heel lang bewoond. In de grotten worden in de zomer ’s avonds concerten gegeven. Dat lijkt mij een unieke ervaring.

Kerk

Tot slot is er natuurlijk een kerkje te vinden.

Het is in dit geval een Romaans exemplaar uit de twaalfde en dertiende eeuw. De buitenkant heeft een klassieke vorm die je in veel dorpen en steden in de Villespir tegenkomt. De portalen zijn zeer fraai en het interieur is redelijk druk versierd met allerlei altaarstukken, zijkapelletjes en een in mooi wit aangeklede Madonna. Dat geeft mij altijd het aangename gevoel dat ik zeer zuidelijk ben.

In de omgeving

Villefranche de Conflent ligt in een streek waar voldoende te doen is. Erg leuk is een ritje in de Train Jaune (gele trein). Deze kleine trein rijdt over een spoor van ruim 60 kilometer en bereikt in Bolquère bijna een hoogte van 1600 meter. Dat is het hoogst gelegen treinstation in Frankrijk. In de zomer rijdt deze trein, speciaal voor toeristen, zonder dak en dan heb je mooi uitzicht. Helaas begon het op de dag dat wij de streek bezochten enorm te regenen, niet echt een goed idee om je in een cabriolettrein te verplaatsen.

Het parcours eindigt in Mont-Louis, een vestingstadje waar Vauban de muren heeft getekend. Nu herbergt het stadje nog altijd een opleidingscentrum voor para’s. Naast deze historische militaire monumenten is een enorme zonneoven te bezoeken die in 1949 werd gebouwd. Daarmee is het de oudste van de wereld en een voorbeeld van alle andere installaties die later zijn gebouwd.

Tot slot zijn er in de directe omgeving van Villefranche de Conflent maar liefst drie andere Plus Beaux Villages de France te vinden: Eus, Evol en Mosset. Wat een weelde daar.
