Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval ligt op de plek waar twee takken van de rivier de Giffre samenkomen. Het dorp is ontstaan nadat er hier in de twaalfde eeuw een klooster werd gesticht. Het klooster staat er nog en de eetzaal uit de zeventiende eeuw is nog te bezichtigen terwijl een deel van het kerkje uit de dertiende eeuw er ook nog staat. Maar de grootste attractie van Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is de waanzinnige natuur.

Pesmes ligt op een strategische plek top de weg tussen Grau en Dole in Franche-Comté. Het dorp kent hierdoor een lange en nogal geweldadige geschiedenis voordat het aan het einde van de zeventiende eeuw voorgoed bij Frankrijk kwam. Ondanks dit turbulente verleden is er nog genoeg van het verleden in Pesmes te bewonderen. De ligging boven de rivier Ognon is prachtig.

Het blauwe water van het meer, de achtergrond met bergen en de charme van een oud middeleeuws dorp, dat zijn de ingrediënten van Yvoire, een dorp aan het meer van Genève in de Savoie. Dat klinkt allemaal te goed om waar te zijn maar geloof mij, als je door Yvoire loopt is het allemaal nog veel mooier. Dit is een topdorp; vijf sterren!

Gargilesse-Dampierre ligt op dik twee uur rijden ten zuiden van Parijs vlak naast de snelweg A20. Het dorp ligt prachtig op de oever van de rivier Gargilesse en trekt door haar schoonheid nog altijd kunstenaars aan. Het heeft een eigen museum en een kerk met verrassend gave fresco’s uit de dertiende eeuw.

La Garde-Adhémar ligt zo’n twintig kilometer ten zuiden van Montélimar pal naast de autoroute du soleil. Het dorp is goed te zien vanaf de beroemde snelweg en vormde voor ons ooit een aangenaam uitzicht in een enorme bouchon. Het is gebouwd op een heuvel en heeft daarom een prachtig uitzicht op het Rhônedal, al moet je daarbij de eerder genoemde snelweg, een vliegveld, de TGV en een kerncentrale maar voor lief nemen. De Fransen willen nu eenmaal ook internetten en zich vervoeren.

Mirmande ligt tussen Valence en Montélimar pal naast de ‘Route du Soleil’. Het dorpje in de Drôme is een uitstekend voorbeeld van terrasbouw dat goed is te zien als je komt aanrijden. Eenmaal in het dorp kan je heerlijk wandelen door de nauwe straatjes en steegjes met kenmerkende bogen tussen de oude huizen.

Saint Quirin is één van de weinige Beaux Villages in Lotharingen. Ik ken de streek ook niet heel goed, maar ik kan mij toch voorstellen dat er wel meer te vinden zijn. Het meest opvallende gebouw in het dorp is zonder twijfel de barokkerk waar de klokkentorens zijn versierd met uivormige punten. Dat doet meer aan Oostenrijk dan aan Frankrijk denken.

Net ten zuiden van Colmar ligt Eguisheim. Het dorp in de Elzas is in cirkels gebouwd rondom een kasteel uit de dertiende eeuw en heeft zo een zeer originele vorm. Van de burcht is helaas alleen de kapel nog over maar is daar niet minder interessant om. Eguisheim is geheel omringt door wijngaarden en daar worden de twee beste wijnen van de Elzas verbouwd; de Eichberg en Pfersigberg.

Mittelbergheim ligt langs de ‘Route des vin d’Alsace‘ aan de voet van de Sainte-Odile, de berg van de patroonheilige van de Elzas. Het dorp vormt een prachtige eenheid met de omgeving waar wijngaarden het landschap domineren. Naast het prachtige landschap kan je hier natuurlijk genieten van de wijn die rondom het dorp wordt verbouwd.

Een beetje dorp in de Provence heeft een beroemde kunstenaar als bewoner gehad. Zo ook Seillans, waar Max Ernst met zijn vrouw Dorothea Tanning in de herfst van zijn leven zijn dagen sleet. Het dorp is door Ernst wellicht beroemd om geworden, het is ook zonder deze kunstenaar prachtig.
