Cluny ligt in het zuiden van Bourgondië ongeveer negentig kilometer ten noorden van Lyon. De kleine stad was ooit het centrum van het Christendom dankzij het enorme klooster. Een deel van de abdijcomplex wordt nu gebruikt door de Nationale stoeterij waardoor paarden een grote rol spelen in het huidige Cluny.

Abdijen genoeg in Frankrijk maar die van Jumièges in Normandië is toch een beetje anders dan de rest en dat heeft vooral te maken met de staat waarin het zich bevindt; het is een ruïne en een mooie ook.

Peyrusse-le-Roc ligt in het mooie gebied van tussen rivieren de Lot en de Aveyron. Wat nu een rustig dorp is was aan het einde van middeleeuwen een drukke stad. Tussen de Dordogne en de Lot ligt op een hoog kalkstenen plateau het Kasteel van Chateau de Gavaudun. Of wat er van over is tenminste. Hoe kan ook is het een prachtige klassieke ruïne uit de middeleeuwen met een merkwaardige poort. Het ligt prachtig in een kloof en je kan er lekker wandelen. Kortom; genoeg om een middagje te vullen.

Belcastel ligt niet ver van Najac en lijkt ook veel op dit andere dorp langs de rivier de Aveyron. Het is er allemaal wat rustiger en gemoedelijker hier want de toeristenindustrie heeft zich hier wat minder ontwikkeld. Net als Najac heeft Belcastel ook een kasteel dat hoog boven het dorp toornt, en net als in Najac is dit gebouw ook niet helemaal heel meer.

Yèvre-le-Châtel ligt ongeveer tachtig kilometer onder Parijs en ondanks de nabijheid van deze metropool, straalt het dorp alles uit wat het platteland van Frankrijk zo aantrekkelijk maakt. Er heerst rust zonder dat je het idee hebt dat je in een uithoek van de wereld zit. Wij hadden het geluk om hier een week een gîte te kunnen huren, midden in het dorp met een tuin op het terras van een dertiende eeuwse burcht. Goed voor drie sterren.
