De huizen van Venasque zijn gebouwd op een steile rots die hoog boven het dal van de Nesque uitsteekt. In het dorp heb je hierdoor een fantastisch uitzicht over de rijke vlakte van de Vaucluse tot aan de Mont Ventoux.

De ‘reus van de Provence‘ is trouwens vernoemd naar het dorp Venasque en niet omdat het boven altijd waait, zoals wij hadden verzonnen.

De Luberon bulkt zo’n beetje van de mooie dorpen en het is dan ook moeilijk om Ménerbes tot mooiste uit te roepen. Toch lijkt het wel zeker dat het plaatsje een finaleplek zou veroveren bij zulk een verkiezing. Het is zeker een van de beroemdste. Bussen vol Amerikanen en Japanners bezoeken het dorpje.

In de Luberon zijn er genoeg ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Niet vreemd want het is een fantastische streek met inderdaad veel schilderachtige dorpjes. Roussillon vormt hier geen uitzondering op maar heeft naast een gezellig dorpscentrum nog een unieke attractie: de grootste okermijn van Europa. En dat is voldoende voor vier sterren.

Gassin ligt op een berg vlak naast Saint Tropez. In tegenstelling tot de drukke badplaats, is het dorp heerlijk rustig en heb je vanaf de oostkant een prachtig uitzicht op de Baai van St. Tropez. Het lijkt wel of de plaatselijke bevolking dit dorp voor zichzelf heeft gehouden. Hoewel Gassin leuke straatjes heeft en er keurig uitziet, geven we het toch twee sterren. Het heeft op ons geen overweldigende indruk gemaakt.

Gordes is een dorp met een natuurlijke schoonheid waar je niet omheen kunt. Ook de toeristenindustrie weet dit maar al te goed en het plaatsje in de Vaucluse is ‘s zomers ook compleet gevuld met buitenlanders. Toch is de schoonheid van dit dorp zo groot dat het van ons vijf sterren krijgt. Er heen dus maar dan wel het liefst in het voor- of naseizoen. Kan je echt alleen in de zomer, dan is het dorp in juli nog net te doen, ga in augustus alleen in de avond.

Les Baux-de-Provence ligt tussen Avignon en Arles in. De weg naar dit dorp is al een beleving. De route vanaf het oosten leidt door een steenwoestijn waar ineens een kleine bergketen opdoemt. Verscholen tussen deze bergen ligt het mooie dorp. Terecht een ‘Plus Beaux Village’ want het ligt uniek en heeft een zeer eigen sfeer. Wel jammer dat het wel heel toeristisch is, daarom vier sterren.
