Het kasteel van Cormatin in het zuiden van Bourgondië ligt op een eiland in het riviertje Grosne op een klein half uur rijden van Cluny. Het kasteel is gebouwd als woning en heeft nooit dienst gedaan als verdedigingswerk. Binnen zijn een aantal kamers te vinden uit de achttiende eeuw die uniek zijn voor de geschiedenis van Frankrijk. Guédelon ligt midden in de bossen van Noord-Bourgondië en is sinds 1997 de plek waar een ‘middeleeuws’ kasteel wordt gebouwd. Het kasteel ‘uit’ de dertiende eeuw wordt nu pas gebouwd volgens de oorspronkelijke technieken. Dit bleek een groot succes waarbij meer dan 300.000 mensen per jaar komen kijken. Een bezoek is ook aan te raden. Het kasteel is open van april tot november.

Cluny ligt in het zuiden van Bourgondië ongeveer negentig kilometer ten noorden van Lyon. De kleine stad was ooit het centrum van het Christendom dankzij het enorme klooster. Een deel van de abdijcomplex wordt nu gebruikt door de Nationale stoeterij waardoor paarden een grote rol spelen in het huidige Cluny.

Er wordt gezegd dat de Cité de l’Automobile in Mulhouse de grootste verzameling auto’s ter wereld heeft. Dat is een claim die moeilijk te controleren is want wat is überhaupt een autoverzameling. Reken je een parkeerplaats bij een fabriek mee? Of bij een sportevenement als Le Mans? Het lijkt mij niet maar ik laat die claim toch voor wat het is want kwaliteit zegt hier niet zo veel. Kwaliteit wel en dat heeft de Collection Schlumpf in overvloed. Ook al heb je niet veel interesse in auto’s dit museum is de moeite waard.

Tussen Carcassonne en Limoux ligt het prachtige dorp Saint Hilaire. Het is gebouwd rondom een abdij die nog altijd fier midden in het dorp staat. Hierom heen kronkelen nauwe straatjes waar je opvallend weinig toeristen tegenkomt. Een fijne plek waar je je zeker een paar uur vermaakt.

Polignac ligt even ten noorden van le Puy-en-Valey in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Het dorp is gebouwd rondom een vulkanische berg waarop de voornaamste attractie zich bevindt; een kasteel. Althans de overblijfselen daarvan en die zijn er precies genoeg om voor ons eentwintigste-eeuwers de fantasie op hol te laten brengen. Het prachtige uitzicht op Le Puy helpt daar ook flink bij.

Honfleur is een mooi stadje aan monding van de Seine en ligt tegenover Le Havre dat aan het andere kant van het water ligt. Het stadje, of dorp, is beroemd om zijn prachtige oude haven en gezellige straatjes en pleintjes. Het is een populaire bestemming, misschien een beetje te populair.

Giverny is een bescheiden dorpje vlakbij de Seine op een dik uur rijden van Parijs met een kerkje een leuk straatje kortom een dorp zoals honderden in Frankrijk. Toch is Giverny wereldberoemd en dat heeft alles te maken dat hier de beroemdste schilder van Frankrijk voor een groot deel van zijn woonde; Claude Monet.

In Étretat staan de beroemdste bogen van Frankrijk, geheel gemaakt van kalk en vormgegeven door de natuur. In dit charmante maar druk bezochte badplaatsje werd het toerisme in Frankrijk feitelijk uitgevonden. Hier komen al meer dan tweehonderd jaar mensen die de drukte van Parijs willen ontlopen en genieten van het magische spel van schaduw en licht van de lucht, zee en rotsen. Deze plek was de speeltuin de hoge adel van Europa, de nieuwe rijken en werd vereeuwigd door de beste schilders die Frankrijk voortbracht.
