Op aanraden van kijkers hebben we ons als programmamakers van het tv-treinreisprogramma Rail Away verdiept in een treinroute door de Franse Jura met de Ligne des Hirondelles (regio: Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). Door alle coronatoestanden hebben we al een aantal Rail Away-reizen moeten uitstellen, maar dit deel van Frankrijk is nog code geel, dus dat biedt perspectief.

Door de huidige onzekere situatie durven we nog niet te hard te hopen op een mooie zomervakantie in Frankrijk. Toch lijken de voorspellingen gunstig te zijn. Europa doet er alles aan om rond de zomervakantie weer open te gaan voor toeristen. Een tiental kilometer boven Verdun staat midden in het dorpje Romagne-sous-Montfaucon een bijzonder museum. Hier kan je in een grote schuur naast de kerk midden in het dorp een indrukwekkende verzameling spullen uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog bekijken, voelen en ruiken.

Ploumanac’h ligt aan de noordelijke kust van Bretagne op een eigen schiereiland en is beroemd om zijn roze rotsen. Deze zijn het best te zien direct langs de kustlijn dat hier uitermate grillig verloopt. Het dorpje Saint-Guirec is een gezellige mix van haven en strand. Het heidelandschap direct achter de kust maakt dit paradijsje voor wandelaars compleet.

Tussen het D-Day geweld op het schiereiland Cotentin is het makkelijk om de andere mooie en interessante plekken over het hoofd te zien. Het vissersdorp Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue met zijn mooie baai en oude forten is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Het ligt op half uur rijden van Utah-Beach en werd in 2019 door de Fransen zelf gekozen tot mooiste dorp van het jaar.

Boulogne-sur-Mer is een heerlijk stadje dat schreeuwt om ontdekt te worden door toeristen. Er is voldoende te doen voor een dagje of zelfs een weekend en vormt bovendien een uitstekende uitvalsbasis voor expedities naar de rest van de opaalkust.
