Wie de drukte van de Côte d’Azur wil ontvluchten hoeft niet echt ver te rijden om het landelijke karakter van het achterland te kunnen proeven. Coaraze ligt op een half uurtje rijden ten noorden van Nice en biedt die heerlijke rust die dorpen in het zuiden van Frankrijk zo kenmerkt.

Het middeleeuwse Coaraze ligt prachtig op een heuvel die uitkijkt op helling vol met olijfbomen. De kleine zwarte olijven met hun intense smaak die hier worden verbouwd zijn geliefd in heel Frankrijk. Deze kleine vruchtjes geven de streek al eeuwenlang hun identiteit. Saint-Véran in de Hautes-Alpes is volgende de Fransen het hoogste dorp in Europa dat het hele jaar door bewoond wordt. Maar er zijn meer dorpen in de Alpen die dit claimen. Met ruim 2000 meter hoogte ligt het in ieder geval hoger dan de top van de Mont Ventoux en is het daarmee het dorp in de Queras het hoogste van Frankrijk. En dat vinden wij voldoende.

De streek bij de grens tussen Frankrijk en Italië bij Menton heeft één van de meest dramatische landschappen die ik ken. Hier duiken vanaf het noorden de Alpen de Middellandse Zee in en dat zorgt voor een prachtig samenspel tussen de ruige bergen en het blauwe water van de zee. Hoog in dit landschap ligt Sainte-Agnès, een dorp met een uniek uitzicht over de zee en de bergen.

Gourdon ligt bijna achthonderd meter op een natuurlijk balkon boven de rivier de Loup. De oude huizen zijn weer in uitstekende conditie en samen met het adembenemende panorama trekt het dorp met succes veel toeristen. Eenmaal in het dorp wordt je verleidt door één van de vele winkeltjes waar kunstenaars en ambachtslieden hun waar aanbieden.

La Grave ligt in een diep dal dat wordt omringt door bergen met toppen van meer dan drieduizend meter. Zoals zoveel dorpen in de Alpen is La Grave in de winter een waar Mekka voor de wintersporter en ‘s zomers het terrein voor bergsporters en sportieve wandelaars. In tegenstelling tot veel andere dorpen is La Grave niet in handen gekomen van grote projectontwikkelaars en zo is het dorp kleinschalig gebleven en heeft het haar originele karakter behouden.

Een beetje dorp in de Provence heeft een beroemde kunstenaar als bewoner gehad. Zo ook Seillans, waar Max Ernst met zijn vrouw Dorothea Tanning in de herfst van zijn leven zijn dagen sleet. Het dorp is door Ernst wellicht beroemd om geworden, het is ook zonder deze kunstenaar prachtig.

Bargème ligt op 1.097 meter boven de zeespiegel en is daarmee het hoogst geleden dorp van het departement Var. Het uitzicht op de omgeving is adembenemend. De torens van het middeleeuwse kasteel domineren het aanzicht van het dorp. Het gebouw werd verwoest tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen in de zestiende eeuw.

De Camargue is een uitgestrekt moerasland dat ligt in de delta van de Rhône in het zuiden van de Provence. De natuur heeft hier de vrije hand daarom vind je in dit moerasgebied unieke planten en dieren. Het gebied heeft meerdere gezichten en voor een bezoek moet je toch zeker een dag uittrekken waar je natuur, strand en cultuur uitstekend combineren. Fietsen en paardrijden kan hier uitstekend. Ik had mijn fiets niet bij mij en paardrijden kan ik niet dus de auto was het aangewezen vervoer en we hadden een prima dag in het gebied aan het einde van Frankrijk.

De Mont Ventoux is misschien wel de bekendste berg van Frankrijk, alleen de Mont Blanc kan met hem wedijveren. De reus van de Provence is met name bekend om met een fiets te beklimmen maar ook met de auto is de tocht naar de top een unieke ervaring.

De Luberon in het zuiden van Frankrijk is een ware schatkamer van mooie dorpen. Het bergachtige landschap herbergt tal van schilderachtige gehuchten en plaatsjes. In het zuidoosten van de Luberon ligt Ansouis met zijn kasteel die zich boven een doolhof van straatjes en steegjes uit toornt.

De Luberon is een bergmassief tussen de Vaucluse in het noorden en de rivier Durance in het zuiden en vormt zo de grens tussen het binnenland en de kuststreek van de Provence. Ansouis is één van de vele mooie dorpen die deze streek rijk is. De hoeveelheid plaatsjes met het predicaat ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ is hier groot maar in bijna elk gehucht in deze streek wil je wel oud worden. Dat gebeurt ook want in de bevolking van de Luberon stijgt behoorlijk dankzij de immigratie van met name noorderlingen.
