Bretagne ligt als een enorme golfbreker in de Atlantische Oceaan in het westen van Frankrijk. De streek heeft een zeer eigen karakter dat is gevormd door de kust en het ruige landschap. De kust is bijna 3.000 kilometer lang en bestaat uit duizenden inhammen, kliffen en binnenzeeën. Een heerlijk land om vakantie te vieren.

Normandië ligt in het westen van Frankrijk en is al sinds de negentiende eeuw geliefd bij toeristen. De streek heeft een gemoedelijk landschap en beschikt bovendien over een mooie  kust met schitterende stranden. Normandië heeft een lange geschiedenis en dat maakt het nog interessanter.

Aha een lijstje! Je ziet ze veel op internet en dit is er ook één en wel mijn lijst van de mooiste plekken in de Provence. Het is een persoonlijke lijst en daarom volkomen subjectief. Desondanks zijn dit volgens mij de mooiste en bijzonderste plekken in de Provence, in willekeurige volgorde.

Als God bestaat dan woont hij in de Provence, of in Toscane. Misschien is dat wat overdreven, maar Hij heeft wel erg zijn best gedaan bij het maken van deze streek in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Het lijkt wel of je je in de Provence als bijna vanzelf een gelukkig mens voelt. Bergen, vlaktes met lavendelvelden en wijngaarden, prachtige steden, gezellige dorpjes en natuurlijk de diepblauwe Middellandse Zee zijn de ingrediënten van dit zonnige land. Ook in het verleden heeft de streek veel mensen aangetrokken en het heeft dan ook een zeer interessante geschiedenis.

Carennac ligt als een plaatje hoog boven de rechteroever van de Dordogne aan de rand van de Haut-Quercy. Bij het bezoeken van dit dorp begrijp je direct waarom deze streek zo geliefd is bij toeristen. Carennac heeft alles om het plaatje compleet te maken: een kasteel, een kerk, een klooster, schilderachtige straatjes en een prachtig uitzicht op de Dordogne.

Wij bezochten Carennac begin mei in een aarzelend zonnetje. Het toeristenseizoen was nog duidelijk in de opstartfase. De obers bewaakten met een dromerige blik de terrassen waar enkele dagjesmensen twijfelend aanschoven.

Wie aan een leven in Frankrijk denkt, ziet zichzelf al snel op het terras van een kasteel achter een goed glas wijn. En het is waar, in Frankrijk staan heel veel kastelen, van bouwvallen uit de tiende eeuw tot negentiende-eeuwse luxueuze lustoorden. Het bekendste kastelengebied is de Loire. Hier staan niet alleen heel veel kastelen, maar ook de mooiste die je in Frankrijk kan vinden.

Langs de rivieren de Dordogne en de Lot zijn behoorlijk wat grotten te bezoeken. Gouffre de Padirac is één van de bekendste en spectaculairste. Dit komt omdat er twee zaken van deze grot zeer tot de verbeelding spreken. Ten eerste bestaat de ingang uit een enorm gat in de grond met een doorsnede van meer dan veertig meter en ten tweede stroomt in de grot een rivier, waar je met gondels overheen vaart. Naast de prachtige zalen zijn het deze twee eigenschappen die deze grot zo geliefd maken bij toeristen.

De toeristen, die sinds halverwege de vorige eeuw in steeds grotere aantallen de Dordogne en de Lot bezoeken, zijn niet de eerste die worden aangetrokken door dit land van melk en honing. Wie de eerste mensen zijn geweest die hier neerstreken, is niet met zekerheid te zeggen. Tegenwoordig zijn de geleerden het er wel over eens dat ongeveer 35.000 jaar geleden Neanderthalers de streek bewoonden. En geef ze ongelijk want het klimaat was er goed, het water helder en er waren voldoende herten en runderen om achteraan te rennen.

Van alle streken in Frankrijk spreekt Bourgondië ons Nederlanders waarschijnlijk het meest aan. Alleen het woord al. Spreek Bourgondië maar eens hardop uit en je krijgt direct een gelukkig gevoel. Bourgondisch leven spreekt iedereen aan en als we de bierreclame mogen geloven, begrijpen wij calvinisten daar niets van. Zak je onder de rivieren, dan vind je het Bourgondische leven al snel. In Brabant en Limburg weten ze wat eten, feesten en liefhebben is. Ook de Belgen schijnen er verstand van te hebben.
