Het kleine dorpje Loubressac ligt op een rots boven de vallei van de Dordogne in de regio Midi-Pyrénées. Het dorpje heeft een kasteel, een mooie kerk en is nog niet zo druk met toeristen zodat je hier nog de rustige sfeer van de Quercy kan beleven met een adembenemend uitzicht op het dal van de Dordogne.

De Luberon in het zuiden van Frankrijk is een ware schatkamer van mooie dorpen. Het bergachtige landschap herbergt tal van schilderachtige gehuchten en plaatsjes. In het zuidoosten van de Luberon ligt Ansouis met zijn kasteel die zich boven een doolhof van straatjes en steegjes uit toornt.

De Luberon is een bergmassief tussen de Vaucluse in het noorden en de rivier Durance in het zuiden en vormt zo de grens tussen het binnenland en de kuststreek van de Provence. Ansouis is één van de vele mooie dorpen die deze streek rijk is. De hoeveelheid plaatsjes met het predicaat ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ is hier groot maar in bijna elk gehucht in deze streek wil je wel oud worden. Dat gebeurt ook want in de bevolking van de Luberon stijgt behoorlijk dankzij de immigratie van met name noorderlingen.

De Eerste Wereldoorlog kan rekenen op steeds meer aandacht. Iets ten noorden van Amiens in Beaumont-Hamel ligt één van de grootste monumenten van de slachting van jonge mannen in Noord-Frankrijk. Hier zijn de loopgraven nog te zien in een gebied waar zich een indrukwekkend verhaal afspeelde.

Meer dan honderd jaar geleden begonnen de grote landen in Europa collectief elkaar de hersenen in te slaan. Wij kennen dit conflict als de Eerste Wereldoorlog waarin miljoenen soldaten werden afgeslacht op een betrekkelijk klein gebied in Vlaanderen en Noord-Frankrijk. Na een eeuw zijn de littekens die dit conflict heeft veroorzaakt in het landschap nog altijd te zien. Eén van de grootste en indrukwekkendste plekken ligt bij Beaumont-Hamel. Parfondeval ligt in het oosten van Picardië tegen de Champagne aan. Het dorp ligt in een typisch Noord-Frans landschap met heuvels en een agrarische uitstraling. Zoals een Frans dorp betaamt, ligt in het midden van Parfondeval de kerk waarvan de vormgeving verre van normaal is. In de avondschaduw van de Mont Ventoux en een beetje verscholen in de luwte van de grote toeristenstroom ligt Montbrun les Bains. De toevoeging ‘les Bains’ geeft aan dat het hier om een badplaats gaat, in dit geval een kuuroord met geneeskrachtige bronnen. Dat is natuurlijk fijn, maar daarvoor gaan wij niet naar een dorp, wel om zijn schilderachtige huizen en straten want in Montbrun les Bains lijkt het alsof je in een ansichtkaart loopt.

Séguret ligt in het noorden van de Vaucluse en is gebouwd op de noordelijke kant van de bergen van de Dentelles de Montmirail, waardoor het uitkijkt op de vlakte van het prachtige Rhônedal. Het dorp  staat vol met prachtige oude huisjes en omdat het autovrij is, waan je je er in de middeleeuwen. De oostelijke oever van de Rhône wordt, in de buurt van Séguret, voor een groot deel gebuikt om druiven te verbouwen, waarvan vanzelfsprekend wijn wordt gemaakt.

Een reisgids is voor ons één van de belangrijkste stukken bagage als wij naar Frankrijk gaan, alleen de creditcard is nog belangrijker. Deze is bij ons gewoon van papier, handzaam, stevig en hij moet voldoende informatie bevatten. Een reisgids als e-boek is wel handig voor bij de gîte of camping, maar in het veld is het gewoon te onhandig. Daarbij kan je op papier nog eens makkelijk aantekeningen maken, gewoon met een pen.

Frankrijk heeft een prima wegennet dat je snel naar je bestemming brengt. Nadeel is natuurlijk dat je moet betalen. Het betalen zelf is al niet leuk, maar de hele afhandeling vormt een nog grotere irritatie: niet zelden staan er kilometers file voor een tolpoort. Vanaf volgende week heb ik daar veel minder last van want ik heb Télèpèage. Hoera!

De ligging van Tourtour is echt fantastisch. Het dorp ligt ruim zeshonderd meter hoog, waardoor het een prachtig uitzicht heeft op bijna de gehele Provence. Bij mooi weer zie je in het zuiden de bergen van Frejus en in het noordwesten is de Mont Ventoux te zien. Maar niet alleen het uitzicht is betoverend. De gezellige straatjes, de sfeervolle pleintjes en de Romaanse huizen en gebouwen geven je het gevoel dat je hier nooit meer weg wil.

De snelwegen in Frankrijk zijn prima, maar je moet er wel voor betalen. Dat vinden wij Nederlanders minder en als je helemaal naar het zuiden rijdt kan het flink oplopen.
